In about two years from now we will begin to see the next excursion for a BMW Sport Activity Coupe With the X2 which will be a downsized version of the X4 and X6 for the compact segment. Along with a 2er Gran Coupe , X2 will provide consistency for the portfolio with the X6 and 6er Gran Coupe , X4 and 4er Gran Coupe and of course X2 and the 2er Gran Coupe.

The smaller X2 will arrive at the time when compact utility vehicles will expand their market share. Again the same ideas as the X4 and X6 bringing style and individuality to the compact class. One model that provides the template for the X2 is the MINI PACEMAN and in some markets you will not get yours till the end of 2013 , that is how well the PACEMAN has taken to its market.

An artist proposal for the X2. (Based on X4?) Not accurate rendition but very good render of how the car could take shape?
X2 design will share the bloodline with the all-new X1 but like the X4 and new X6 will inherit different rear end and front styling to distinguish them as the sportiest activity vehicles BMW offers. Some current aspects from X1 E84 are carried over and reinterpreted for the new line such as kicked up rear window and strong body sculpture.

Thats cool and all, but what about the other long rumored car? The rwd sub Z4 roadster? Is that still on track? I thought I was in the market for a car now, but its looking like in a 1-3 years from now, and this car has my attention if BMW will build it.

pictures and videos are one thing, but if this vehicle is anything like in the video, it will be the best looking suv/sac on the road when it comes out. i think the coupe concept fit this proportion better than the x6. x6 too long imo

But will the X2 be a 3 door like the Paceman? That's what I'm looking for, something like the Paceman without the fugly interior and with the BMW power, drivetrain, and AWD.

thought this looked pretty awesome at first, but in hindsight...

the X6, and now X4, do share some a lot of C-pillar design elements with the 3GT and 5GT models, which is NOT a good thing. i'll stay away - stick to sedans and traditional SUVs.

i would totally be on board for an X7, with a legit adult-sized 3rd row to take on the GL or the LX570, but i don't think thats happening anytime soon....

Then don't buy one.

I need to see one of these in person, to figure out how big they are. I wish they had it ready for this spring's auto show rotation.

None of the current SAVs are offered with a manual transmission in the US - could this be an exception? Please.

I don't know this, because I'm not an SUV fan. To me, their purpose seems to be to block my vision while clogging the passing lane. But how many other manufacturers make this many SUV models? Probably GM, I'm sure. But I don't think the other 2 domestics have that many. And why? If you need an SUV, why buy a fake SUV like the X4 or X6, which have less cargo space than a 5 Series? What's next? Pick 'em up trucks? Hummers? (Marketing idea...Bummers!). Minivans? I wonder if their dealerships have been advised to double the size of their showrooms.

The latest pictures taken in Dubai are simply stunning. Something we trying to capture in Shanghai with the production model of the BMW i3 futuristic styling in an almost alien backdrop of a futuristic city.

As long as SAVs dominate the market segments then you will see more from premium manufacturers. The luxury segment for the 7er , A8 , S-Klasse etc are being decimated by luxury SUVs and in case of the 7er in some markets this is being outsold by the 6er Gran Coupe .

So you have to provide sustainability in regards to what could happen tomorrow as in the luxury segment the demographics have changed. Which is why we will see more practical four door sports coupes and SAVs from premium manufacturers in the high end luxury segment.

Right now in the sub-compact , compact and high luxury segment there is a huge boom in SUVs which is why you will find many manufacturers being specific about these segments.

I've been waiting for something like the X4. I hope the production doesn't deviate much. (It's already been speculated which might change.) I hope it gets the upgraded Idrive and don't expect much to change in the interior from the x3. Although I do hope BMW differentiates it a little. Can't wait for this to land in US soil

OK, and thanks Scott. But to me that explains the X5, maybe a stretch for the X6. Are you saying the same dynamic is at work with smaller vehicles too? I see the logic of replacing a 7 with an even bigger boat, but can't see someone having difficulty deciding between a 3 Series and an X3 or X4.

Thanks though, for the demographics info.

BMW's intent for this car type may not speak to you. Which is totally OK, by the way.

BMW is not trying to offer competing models against other car companies. What they are trying to do is to deliver the BMW ownership experience to more people who want BMWs but have varying needs.

They aren't building SUVs as alternatives for people who would be driving Tahoes otherwise. They're building SUVs for people who would be driving 3 and 5 series cars otherwise, but who can't or don't want to for whatever reason.

I don't think anyone will cross-shop an X4 against a pickup, or even, say, a Chevy Equinox. Rather, they'll cross shop against a 4 series coupe, which they want but can't have because it lacks clearance or rear doors. The X4 gives them a similar sporty image but in a form factor that works for them.

best post so far.

i for one is interested in this x4. I dont like the current x5 nor x3. I wanted something that rides higher and wanted something sporty and proportioned right. in VIDEO...and i stress VIDEO, this vehicle is proportioned right. hopefully the headroom in the rear is enough.
