Anyone Changed Their Rear Pads?

I mean changed them yourself rather than had the dealer do it? Any tips or suggestions? Any special tools needed? Do the pistons just slide back into the caliper or do they need to be "wound"back in?

Any help appreciated, thanks.

I believe with the electronic handbrake you have to plug a laptop in to tell the pistons to pull back.

I was charged a tenner to have this done on a passat which has a similar set up by a local garage with the software then fitted the pads myself (pads cost 30). VW wanted over 150 for the job

Why would you change them yourself? Are they not covered under maintenence there? In the U.S they are coverered for 4 years, 50,000 miles.

Answer to your question, yes you do have to use a c clamp of sort to clasp the calibor to put the new pad on. But why do it while under warranty? Changed the brakes on my older 325i for half the price they want at the dealership.

No, they're not a warranty item, not in the UK anyway. I'm surprised that they are under warranty in the U.S, they're a wear item surely?

They are covered in the more expensive maintenance package but I only have the one that doesn't cover pads and clutch.

To answer my own question, I have just replaced my rear pads at 20,000 miles.

The car was telling me that I had 800 miles left on the pads but when I took them out they have about 1/4" of pad left so I could have left them to go a bit longer.

Replacement was pretty straightforward. The pistons do need to be would back in but they don't need to be done electronically and nor do they need a G clamp or special tools of any kind. I just used a pair of pliers inserted in two if the three indents in the face of the piston.

Note that the pads are not all the same. There is an inside pad and an outside pad. They are the same shape but there are two small domes on the back of the pads and they are closer together on the outside pad and further apart on the inside.

Once done re-set the service warning via the button on the bottom left of the instrument cluster.
