Alarm Going Off Untouched?

My 35i has been sounding the alarm with ZERO stimulus over the past month or so. You arm it, walk away, and then 10 seconds later it starts and there is literally NO ONE near the thing.

Today it went off twice in a half hour in front of my house, completely untouched.

Has anyone run into this before? The only thing I can think of is sometimes I leave the sunroof tilt open when running in and out doing errands etc...would that set off an internal sensor or something if wind comes in?

Now that you mention it, mine went off yesterday. Unfortunately, I didn't recognize the alarm tone, so I didn't go out immediately. However, when I went out, the halo lights and side marker lights were all on. I had left the sun roof popped up. I don't know, but there may be something with roof open and some outside "event" causes the alarm to go off. But, I'd been parked in the driveway for about a half hour before the alarm went off.

The X3 has an interior motion sensor that can be triggered by air movements. If the alarm is set, the sunroof should be closed, or the motion sensor override should be activated:

From the Owner's Manual pp. 43

Interior motion sensor
The windows and glass sunroof must be closed
for the system to function properly.

Avoiding unintentional alarms
The tilt alarm sensor and interior motion sensor
can be switched off together, such as in the following
situations:
▷ In automatic car washes
▷ In duplex garages.
▷ During transport on car-carrying trains, at
sea or on a trailer.
▷ When animals are to remain in the vehicle.

Switching off the tilt alarm sensor and
interior motion sensor

Press the button on the remote control
twice in succession.
The indicator lamp lights up for approx. 2 seconds
and then flashes continuously.
The tilt alarm sensor and interior motion sensor
are switched off until the vehicle is locked again.

On occasion, reading the manual may actually help.

Ya, it's a very quiet alarm, I wondered if I heard it right the first time as well.

Thanks for that info Lotus!

On a tangent, is the car alarm an option they usually ask if you want while you sign the papers or is it standard with the X3?

This is true. Problem is, once I'm inside with the manual, another part of the brain kicks in, the reading stops, and the drive commences.

A couple of times when I first had mine I was walking back to it after being in a store and noticed the lights flashing but no noise I could hear. I have no idea what was going on but have not seen that again in a number of months.
