HPFP replaced

I thought I would share that I have just had the high pressure fuel pump replaced on my 2011 X3 (335i). 37K miles and no longer under warranty.

The car went into reduce power mode 3 times in a week with "Drivetrain Malfunction" as the error on the car display. Reading the codes from the car I got P15DF, P0087 & P10D9.

Hoping this is just a one off and I'm not part of an early batch that will see HPFP issues, which I understand was a problem with the N54 engine.

I feel your pain . So I can't see your location right now but do you think the gas where you are at is bad or contains too much ethanol ? Not that I am against ethanol, as I run 5 gallons in my 335i, but just wondering because I haven't heard of many N55's having that issue. Maybe you ran the tank dry once or twice???

Located in Boston, I've never actually paid attention to the ethanol % here and if it varies by gas station. Perhaps I should start doing that!

I've never run out of gas completely, if that's what you mean, but do regularity to the light.

Yeah I meant that if you ran it low on gas when the second chime stays that you might have starved the pump a bit. Also just consider using a stabilizer or ethanol fuel conditioner especially if you do not drive enough. Using gas with ethanol is not necessarily bad by itself but under the right condition ethanol can separate from the gas and float to the top. Then as you get low on gas the remainder is basically separated water and ethanol. That by itself without gasoline to lubricate the pumps can cause problems.
Anyway, glad you got it fixed and I hope you never have to deal with it again.!!!

Massachusetts gas contain 10% ethanol, most modern cars are design to handle 10% ethanol.

I'm getting the same fault codes as the original poster - wondering if anyone else has had same issue, and whether the HPFP fix was the final fix?

That's awfully low mileage for OFHG on a N55.

HPPF - N55 systemic issues?

My 2012 x3 35i was brought in to BMW for diag yesterday - happened late so I didn't get full details but the message from the shop is that it's HPFP which needs to be replaced. Has 103k kms (63k miles). This is a disappointment esp given the price, post-warranty. Going to talk to the service manager this morning.

Anyone heard of a bigger issue? I understand the N54 had full recall. Apparently there's no warranty or recall on this part... yet?

HPFP was replaced and it runs well today though feels a bit different in the acceleration - didn't really have a chance to drive much yet, will drive it around more tonight.

Got photos of the old pump Part # (I think) but very difficult to make out digits - does anyone know what part # the faulty N54 engines were using? Mine starts with 1330...

Lastly, does anyone know what this means? "Adaptations were reset during test plan". Will call to find out if they reprogrammed the car for some reason.

Not cheap - $1240 plus labour & taxes bring this just north of $2000 CDN.

HPFP Fails

Hi Pault, I have to have the HPFP replaced on my 2012 X3 35I also.
I learned that BMW has extended the warrenty for this part to 110,000 miles for some models, but not X3s. Not nice.
BTW what did the dealer charge for the repair?

"A BMW Fuel Pump"

My HPFP on my 2014 335i died after running it hard on the track for 4 hours straight in back to back sessions at Summit Point Jefferson Circuit this past weekend. My 335i has 116k miles on the odometer and it's been driven pretty hard on the track.

I just ordered the parts. OEM Bosch HPFP is about $230 and a Genuine LPFP for $315. I already had the engine bay disassembled in my home garage and I plan to replace the HPFP, LPFP, fuel pressure sensor, all the gaskets on the intake manifold/throttle body, and fuel injectors myself. I think it'll cost a bit over $1000 in parts.

With 116k miles on the odometer, I don't want to have another fuel system issue on this car while I'm at the track.
