Faulty Alloys

Is anyone having same problem as i am with alloys. My M sport wheels style 310M have started what appears to be chipping / furring on centre of alloy around wheel boss. Not a problem as my dealer has ordered replacement. problem being that was 16 weeks ago, and now have been informed it is at least another 3 weeks provisionally. Apparentley there is millions of pounds worth of replacements on order. Waited less time for delivery of my vehicle than repacement alloys.

I am worried. I have not yet seen anything on my 310:s, but if it is a design/material problem, it is probably a matter of time.

Can you, please, supply pictures.

I double checked my rims - no problem. On the other hand, I have two cars and garage - X4 is used for long trips.
Are there faults on the polished - and laquered- surface?

have taken photo, just hoping better half can down load it for me. apparently it is a reaction between alloys and plastic wheel boss , so i have been told. both suppliers are supposed to be fighting it out where and with who the fault lies with.

Thanks for pictures - now I know what to look for.

There is a clear coat on the polished al. It looks as if the surface is "broken" and the al starts to corrode. This is common for polished rims with clear coat - but not after a couple of months.

One possibel explanation is that the boss is too big,and will damage the clear coat when installed.

Front wheels "worst" probably because of aggressive brake dust - don`t brake

If bosses have plenty of clearence - what makes them stay? Probably a clip or spring - which could damage the clear coat when boss is installed.

I believe there have been some comic strips, where anchor have been used- more direct result!

Chopper, thank you - very good pictures! One can see typical al-corrosion creeping under clear coat from edge of hole for boss.
To me it is obvious that clear coat is damaged at edge of hole for boss, probably when installing boss.
First explanation: faulty installation of boss or "bad" boss.
A second explanation could be "bad" clear coat - which can`t take the abuse when boss being installed.
Whatever - it is BMW/supplier responsibility.
Very probably BMW/supplier are working on the problem, but normally they will not tell customers, but solve the problem between them.

Check your 310:s!

It's not just for the 310 wheels. That corrosion has been reported on other styles as well, including the standard 18 inch fitments.

My dad has it on his winter sets, but not on the summer alloys.

It seems to me that the clear coat doesn't have a hope of sticking properly to the sharp corners when the boss fits. The alloy should be rounded, instead it has two 45 degree corners....the clear coat will be thin there so damage will easily occur moisture is bound to get in.

I belive that the boss and hole for it is according to STD procedures.

Very probably there is a problem in the process.

Luckily I have no problem- after 7000 km. Early vehicle - before they had to ramp up due to high demand?

Chopper, Big Geordie, any resolution to your problems? I still don`t have a problem, but I am worried, since 310:s are extremely costly. We only have two years of guarantee and no wheel-insurance in my neck of the woods.

I have noticed very limited interest/input when mechanical problems -vast interest when software issues. Do people have time to drive their X4:s?

Big geordie, Chopper45, thanks. This supports my suspicion that supplier fucked up - it will cost him deerly. Since you are about to get new rims, they obviously has found the problem and rectified. Hopefully my rims were prior to "fuck up".
