Hey 28i owners..
We're looking at adding another vehicle to the family and have been considering the 28i...The 35i is more than we are looking to spend, and frankly I don't need that under the hood for what we want the x3 to do.
So have you enjoyed your 4 banger? The IL 6 was one smooth, gem of a motor! How happy or unhappy have you been with your choice? Are you happy with the newly styled vehicle and quality? I've owned many bmw's over the years including 5 series, diesel & petrol x5 and x6 too..Currently enjoying the second love of my life - the mighty M3. I'm working some #'s with a dealer on Monday and going to test drive one too.. My thanks in advance for sharing your experience! Edit - fixed!

Let's get one thing straight: it is NOT 2.8, it is either 28i or 2.0t, if you want to operate on that level, but 2.8 is so wrong, please do not use that...

I own the 2.8 and absolutely love the vehicle. The price difference between engines in Canada is approx $5,000, so could not justify the higher price, otherwise could have chosen an MDX.
As for the drive, they are essentially the same except the famous BMW roar. The 240+ HP is more than adequate for your needs. I read more than 75% sold are 2.8 models. BMW uses the 2.8 engine on the X1, Z3, 328, 528 and impending X4. With so many vehicles using this engine, the likelihood for failure is slim. Comparing the options of the vehicles seem like the 3.5 offers better value, but you'll order at least 2 of 3 packages (Technology, Executive or (Premium). So you'll still have the same options and price difference. I used the savings for the Snow Tire Package and other smaller Options and still have a few $000 remaining. A personal choice if the more powerful engine is what you need. To us, the drive is the same with a little less power and slightly less poorer.

like u i couldnt see the extra $ for the 35, and didnt want performance anyway. the 28 is a lot of car, and have had it since nov. havent had a single glitch or complaint. the 28 is plenty fast enough for the way i drive. in fact sometimes i wonder if i dont have too much power. i drove every car out there before buying and what i found was that perhaps the mb rides better and the audi more power but if you want a car that does everything in the excellent reange the 28 is it. (without a huge outlay of cash) the only complaint i really have that the car drives so well that 80 feels like 30, you have no sensation of speed. its a easy car to get a ticket in

Seems like the second generation is well received, I would not have even considered the first generation offering. How is the fit, fitment and overall quality? I'll get a feel for that myself tomorrow when I'm at the dealer, but you guys have been driving it a while. Glad to hear you've been trouble free - which is nice considering it's a brand new motor under the hood.

Like you said if you already have an M3 and are simply looking for utility then the 28i is adequate enough, buy it and never look back.
The only issue I have with the 28i is a matter of perception. I know the new turbo 4 produces more power than the outgoing engine but if you're going to spend around $50k for a car then you'll want some type of 6 cylinder. It's the same argument with the next gen M3, it will be a guarantee that the tri-turbo inline 6 will make more power than the outgoing V8 but people still aren't happy that BMW is putting a 6 cylinder in the new M3. Worse, it's a 2-liter now. The 2013 MY engine lost 2 cylinders and 1L of displacement. |

At idle, in particular when accelerating while warming up, the N20 sounds like a diesel engine with 250K miles on it. It's almost embarrassing to have that sound come from a 50K+ car. Perhaps I'm a little biased because the S65 sounds like metal on metal sex. Other than that it's an amazing little engine. I think it's a perfect stable of cars, good luck. |

This is my first BMW so my '13 28i is plenty of machine, especially when I put it into Sport mode. Usually I leave it in Comfort mode.
I love how the X3 handles.

I now have over 5000 miles on my 2013 X3 28i and I love it. I commute 2 hours each day and I actually look forward to the drive.
There's plenty of power. This is my first BMW and my last car was a manual transmission Toyota Tacoma. Most of the time, I'm kinda worried I'm going to get a ticket because the vehicle accelerates effortlessly and before you know it, you're going faster than you thought. I set the speed alarm feature at 80 mph (speed limit here is 75). I'm always surprised when it goes off. I'm always leaving cars in the dust at stop lights...even without trying to do that. My only complaint about the engine/transmission so far is occasional quirkiness with gear shifting, throttle lag and engine breaking. It takes some getting used to but it's really a minor issue in a car that I would still give 4.9 stars out of 5. |

I'd totally support the 28i as well. Still waiting for mine to be built and delivered, but after 2 test drives of both the 28 and the 35, as well as driving all the competitors except the MB, the 28 felt like the best option.
And the additional savings at the pump and the lower price is great. I guess if it's your only BMW I can see people rationalizing to get the 35i. Since my DD is a 335xi, I really don't need an SUV that has 40 more TQ, and 60 more HP than its comparable little sister. I'll get more value out of the money I save, and a 300hp SUV isn't going to put the same smile on my face than a sedan will. As for reliability I can't speak to that yet, but I've never had a problem with 3 different BMWs, outside of the occasional minor recall, or a faulty lock actuator. As for fit and finish, I think Audi has the best tech, but BMW has nicer fittings and is a bit easier to use than Audi's interface. All in all, Consumer Reports even gave high accolades to the 2013 model. Only thing is that if you can wait - April builds will have the newest UTD navigation. I unfortunately can't wait around until then. Good luck with your purchase, they have a lot of good deals right now. |
