excuse me, maybe im naive, but im wondering about buying a awd car and then having to put snows on it. my wife's highlander has had all season kelly springfields on it for years and has been excellent in the snow. cant some kind of all weather tires do the job ? i would think the awd should be able to handle it.

All-seasons are good until the temp is -10C. They start losing grip and eventually becomes rock hard with no traction. Where I live there's alot of black ice so winters are a must and it doesn't matter what kind of drive you have.

My last X'er (before this x3) was an X5d - came with 19" all seasons. Prior to that I had an X6 with snows...The comparison was like night to day. I ditched the all seasons on my x5 two weeks into the first winter with it. The turning, stopping, acceleration and overall control between the two tires were not in the same ball-park. Last winter was pretty mild, and I probably would have been just fine with the all seasons. But after being able to compare the two on very capable AWD vehicles, Winter rubber is my preference by far. I'll probably pop $850 for a new set of rubber - winter here is about 5-6 mos long (Nov-April). Plus I'll end-up with less wear on the all seasons and be able to turn em in at lease end with no worry of tire wear and having to replace em on a lease vehicle. Over 3 years the winter tires cost me $283/year

I found a set of 307 rims and Pirelli Sottozero II tires at a local dealer and picked them up for $2600. $650 per corner.
The price seem OK considing the list price is $3700. I know after market rims would be cheaper but I'm ok with the purchase price. I guess now I'll have to fabricate a jack pad from an old hockey puck.

Related to whether or not winter tires are needed: If you ever get into a situation where all-weather titres do not provide the required traction, YES, you NEEDED winter tires. FWIW, Since their introduction in about '93 or 94, I have always run Bridgestone Blizzaks on my eight quattros and associated AWD BMWs. |
