X1 vs X3 size

I saw an X1 on I95 saturday - looks kind of small. I really like the size of the F25 X3 alot more. also, I just adopted a dog so I have finally justified the space increase

The X1 is definitely a 7/8 scale X3.

We originally looked at the X1 - it is smaller but the cost as soon as you add a few extra's makes the X3 a better buy...for us...

My wife recently test drove a 2013 328i and we stopped to look at the X1 while at the dealership. Having driven the X3 for 9 months, I was truly shocked at the interior room. It's probably comparable to the 3-series, but it seemed much smaller. While it seems more intimate than the X3, I wouldn't look at the X1 unless the mileage was significantly higher (I routinely get 27mpg in my X3 on the highway).

Concerning payload, I have dogs myself and all three of them fit comfortably in the back of the X3 with the rear seat up (no Great Danes, mind you, but not Pomeranians either -- about 40-50 lbs each). I have serious doubts about the X1, which seems to have about 5 less inches of cargo depth than the X3 from what I can tell.

The mileage is better (it's smaller/lighter), but it wouldn't serve my purposes.

You do get used to the X3 size quickly. I took mine in for the ASS Last User Mode update. They gave me an E90 loaner. As soon as I got in, I thought how small this car was. And those tiny side view mirrors on the E90? Forget it! The X3 is the perfect size and I think it would be hard to go back to anything smaller.

according to Car and Driver Oct 2012 page 94

"At about 7 inches shorter, three inches narrower, and five inches lower than an X3, the X1 does give up some interior space. it goes on to say rear leg room is tight and compares it to an E46 3 series (2 generations ago...)

my E91 3 series was tight on rear seat leg room as well.

when i stopped by my BMW Center today (see my post about tires) I saw X1's parked next to X3's parked next to X5's. The X1 really looks like a 3 series wagon with some lift. first time I have seen X1 up close, and it looks even smaller then the one i passed on I95 last month. can't imagine choosing one over a 328 xi wagon - i can only compare to my old E91, but when the F31 shows up - it would be an interesting comparison.

I would choose F25 X3 over all of the above.

Same here although I believe the discounts on X1 are much bigger.

There's the basic quality of the interior too....the x3 has a quality feel the X1 doesn't!

I thought an X3 was a 7/8 scale X5 although the interior is similar. I have to agree the X1 is small, not big enough for a everyday family car, the boot is too small if you have kids.

The X3 does feel a better quality inside - in the same way the X5 feels a bit better then the X3 - but the X3 is perfect for us so we are well happy...

I wonder if this exact conversation happens on the X5 board about the X3?

i've sat in the X1 in the showroom.

the interior quality on it is terrible compared to anything in the Fxx generation. hard plastics in a few places, and its riding on the old E8x architecture . if you don't get it with nav, it looks ancient without any sort of LCD screen too.

We have both. The X3 is better for highway use, shopping, and carrying passengers. I use the X1 for commuting. It gets great gas mileage. Plus its more fun to drive.

X1 made on a 3 series car platform. It handles more like a car and is fun to drive. Lower to the ground, less wide, shorter in length, smaller cargo area. Hydraulic steering is available- much more enjoyable to steer with in a sporty car. Gets better gas mileage. X3 is built on a truck body.

It's not as well made as the X3. Cheaper parts are used and it has this very cheesy snap in cup holder. Does not do as well in snow. Fits 4, not 5 people. Manual lift gate. Reminds me of a Suburu. The build quality variance of the X3 compared to the X1 is much greater than the X5 versus the X3.

X1 is built on the 1 series platform, X3 built on the 3 series platform. The hydraulic steering is only available on RWD (s-drive) models.

X1 isn't based directly on the 1 series. Its based on the E91 (previous 3 series wagon). Look at these wheelbase and track measurements on Edmunds...X1 is identical to E91:

X1: http://www.edmunds.com/bmw/x1/2013/f...426442&sub=suv

E91: http://www.edmunds.com/bmw/3-series/...8752&sub=wagon

Ah, the issue of Road & Track I read a while back said it was a combination of the 1 and 3, basically a long wheelbase version of the 1er. Reminded me of the Z3 or the 318ti which was half E30 half E36.

Hydraulic steering is available on s-drvie AND x-drive 28i. I test drove an X-drive and it' has a fantastic feel for the road.

Although the X3 drives more like a car than most any other SUV on the market it's still a truck. Everything about the X1 makes the driver feel like they're in a car.

I'm sorry you're right - I had it backwards. The s-drive models get the electric steering and the x-drive models get hydraulic.
