This was a big problem for me an required 3 trips to the dealer.

But finally, I can say it's fixed after they added felt - haven't heard a thing in four months and it's been very cold in the midwestern U.S.

I've had a slight creaking/rattling coming from the rear of the moonroof, definitely not the rear portion of the tilting front as has been illustrated in this thread (even with it tilted up, the noise is still there). When I close the moonroof cover, it's quiet.

Has anyone else experienced this?

my x3 is at the dealers today for the creaky sunroof, large 'cracking' noise seems to be coming from plastic centre section between the two pieces of glass. Only does it when its cold and the sunshade is open - i will let you know what they say

Use the 10 cent bump stops and be done with it. The dealers don't know what they are doing re: creaking moonroof.

Little rubber or felt "feet" in the right spot (see pictures earlier in the thread) and literally 30 seconds of time, solved the problem completely for me and many others. It's now been several months and a very cold winter (down below 0) and no noise at all. Try this before worrying about the dealer, who may end up doing more harm than good for such a simple fix.

Thanks. I will have to try this later when I get some free time. I have the exact same issue as everyone else. Shade open makes lots of creaks and noise. Except it hasn't bothered me much as I love driving the damn thing.

But now the weather is nicer out in NY. I won't have any excuse but to attempt to get this resolved not that it was a huge problem or anything. I just ordered the oil change kit from ECS and can't wait till it arrives to put fresh blood in the car. I need to spend a good two days with the car to give it that new car feeling again. Oil change, fix creaky moonroof, wash outside and clean inside and so much more. It's a labor of love lol.

I love places like this forum and the wonderful people who help with these situations. It helped me get out of my first lemon. 😄

A big thank you to all!

Dealer put felt tape on the plastic piece between front and rear glass, but the felt tape they used is too thick so the sunroof ended up creaking more.

I ordered some 3M creak reduction tape, they are thin and seem to work well...

exon, peel off the garbage applied by the dealer and stick on the felt/rubber/Teflon bumper. Just go with a proven solution.

Car returned from dealer and somehow they have managed to make it much worse, creaks loads more now than before. I found some adhesive foam strips in the garage last night and stuck them on the tabs as shown on the photo earlier in the thread, first drive and no noise - out again later so will see if it has worked! (fingers crossed)

This was the answer for our 2011 X3 Creaking Panorama Roof

This was the answer for our 2011 X3 Creaking Panorama Roof
( moonroof sunroof )

1. I pressed the button and thus opened and elevated the roof's rear ... (do not slide the roof backwards)

2. After it lifted up the mechanism appeared as in in the lbjgh's photo
http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showpo...6&postcount=74

3. I stuck small clear self-stick pads on both left and right sides at the yellow arrow location in the photo posted.

4. I also put some lightweight 3-in-1 household oil on the metal spring which is just under the new pad platform/bracket.

So far...no panorama roof creaking in the cold of Minnesota.

Last year I found a quick fix... I'll proactively did the same this year to see if last year's fix was only a placebo.

Thanks lbjgh for your fix idea. I fitted two polyurethane bump stops to my car this morning and the creaking noise from my roof disappeared

I tried using the bumpers, but when I closed the panel, it more or less crushed them, and pushed them off (the roof panel seems to come down on a bit of an angle, which pushed them aside). Maybe my bumpers were too thick? Any else experience this?

Here is a photo of a panel of six unseparated self-stick bumpers I used.

They are next to a dime and an iPhone button for reference.

They are each ~5mm thick and ~12mm square.

I'm going to be trying this tonight. My car is been in the shop twice for 10 days total for this issue. I just got it back today and it's still doing it. I should have looked up this thread first...Doh!

Thanks guys! Problem fixed instantly after I spent the whopping $3.40 at Lowes for the bumpers.

Last weekend, I spend 5 minutes fixing the 2 major rattles in my car: sunroof and trunk latch rattle.

I use Velcro instead of bump stop and it worked. What it does is that it pushes the middle plastic piece down creating a slight gap between the glass and the middle plastic piece. This plastic piece is veryyy flimsy. No wonder why it is making noises.

For the trunk latch, use black electric tape and applied on the trunk latch for about 3,4 rotations. The trunk clunking is also gone.

It's still amazing to me that after over 3 years BMW still can't figure out how to fix the sunroof, yet on this forum we figured it out.

In my case they even replaced the entire sunroof cassette, to no avail.
