Loaded X3 with more miles vs non loaded with less miles
Hi,
I have been converging on getting a BMW X3 but i have two options here. 1) Certified pre owned X3 35i with 19K miles for 33K -> only package car has is driver assistance, which adds parking sensors. There are no heated seats, no blind spot. 2) Non certified X3 35i with 35K miles for 34K -> car has heat package, technology package, driver assistance package. So effectively heads up display, heated seats, blind spot monitor, premium sound etc. Looking for advice on one vs the other. Is the more miles BMW a better deal? Is 34K miles pushing the reliability number? Ideally I would like to have the car for 5-6 years. Driving around 10K miles on average in a year. I can pick up learning DIY stuff but would probably want to avoid it for the first 3-4 years. Thanks, Ravi |

Get the CPO. Especially since you want to avoid repairs. Also lower mileage is a big plus.

Loaded with higher miles since 35k miles isnt a lot anyway.
On the other hand, I'd rather spend more money on a CPO loaded one than the one in your scenario (since its not a CPO). Buying a CPO may not cost a lot more than from a private party or dealer since CPO has great offers from BMWFS - anywhere from low APR to credits for being a student, repeat CPO customer, etc. Basic BMW = might as well not buy a BMW = stick with Corolla. |

Some would say that you should never own a BMW which is out of warranty. Doing so can be an expensive proposition. If you go the non-CPO route then find yourself a good Indy, a non-dealer independent mechanic.

I would take the one with the better equipment, cause that's exactly was I just did. I bought a 35i with 60k miles, no warranty, lots of options. No problems so far, but I expect there will be some down the road.
I like options. Why get a BMW with fewer luxuries than a CR-V? |

Who needs blind spot detection? Heated Seats? Depends on your location. Where is't 75degrees plus, it's a big waste of $ in my opinion to have and never use it. Blind spot? Look over your damn shoulders you bunch of lazy people! lol
CPO means nothing for the most part...unless something in the drive train goes wrong...it's not a bumper to bumper warranty. With a vehicle with 34K miles, both should be fairly solid. You didn't list the years of the vehicles either..so that would come in to play with me as would color combo.

It is not always a question of laziness. Some of us have neck issues that may make checking traffic over a shoulder challenging or painful. Also, blind spot monitors provide additional safety when driving on congested roads where looking over my shoulder risks a potential accident should traffic ahead brake suddenly.

Thank you so much for the updates, and your helpful suggestions.
The cars in question are both 2015 X3. The location in question is Seattle. I would like to add that I am capable to take the risk financially for repairs if it occurs. How would that change the discussion of certified non loaded vs loaded? Basically how likely am I to spend 5K on repairs in the next 3 years if I buy a non certified 2015 X3? Any ideas where to look for at a better selection? and shipping it in? Thanks! |

Bought wifeys 2 yrs ago up in Chantilly VA (I'm in Dallas) from BMW dealer. CPO - got tons of pics, so I saw the bumps ahead of time. $750 and 3 days later (and a bank transfer) it gets dropped off 1 block from my house.
My z4 I bought in Pittsburgh. Had my niece test drive (dumb luck, she was at PITT), flew up and wifey and I drove it home over a weekend. Happens all the time now - don't let the distance scare you. |

Yes CPO covers everywhere, Canada and Mexico too if you are on a road trip.
I chose not to purchase a warranty. These cars are pretty reliable, I doubt you will incur that much repairs. The N20 timing chain guides were fixed in 2015 and you can likely fix it before they break if you hear the noise for less $ that the warranty cost. |

The mileage of both is low. The options make a huge difference. Speaking from experience. I owned 6 different BMW models, now I have 4. In the past I had one that had some less options. That particular car - which was excellent - was always every now and then in the garage to upgrade things. Because once you have the car that is less optioned, you will always want more features added, especially if it drives and feels great. Some aftermarket options are really easy to fit and install, whereas others are not so easy and expensive. Plus if you make the wrong choice you can butcher the car (some did). Just get one with the most options possible, lowest mileage if you can and maintenance/repair history.

I'd recommend CPO for peace of mind ..I just bought a '17 x28i CPO with 12k miles for $35k. It's kind of a middle package.. I do wish it had the heated wheel/Heads up display/adaptive cruise control and in retrospect should have done a bit more searching but I'm loving the drive and having an almost new vehicle and the factory and CPO warranty with 4.6 years and unlimited mileage(kinda) is such a relief..
If I was to do it again I wouldn't be such a stickler on my budget.. I am making payments and even if I spent 5k more for every option I wanted as well as CPO wouldn't raise my monthly payment much and would be no compromise. Last edited by envisiondl; 02-18-2018 at 04:42 PM.. |

The heads up display will spoil you and heated seats were mandatory :-) You want the toys, don't "wish" you had bought them later, there are plenty of these on the market to settle for something that doesn't check all you boxes off. |

got my 2017 X3 35i last week with 7585 miles as a CPO with heads up, driving assistance, blind spot assist, parking assist, apple car play, wireless charging, leather seats, heated front seats, xline package, 19" 608 wheels for 44k. really wanted adaptive cruise control and Active Lane Keeping Assistant. missing those and m sport but i couldnt pass up the price from what i saw it seemed like a decent deal. i like that i get the rest of the factory warranty as well as the extra year for the CPO.
i've already added the huper optik tint everywhere. i say if you are more into features go for that one or just wait and get the one you really want. but if the price and features fit you go for it. Last edited by antixian; 03-07-2018 at 11:40 PM.. |

I think you need to rank the options - what you really want vs. what you sort of want or don't care about. For me, 35i (vs 28i) was a requirement, M-Sport was pretty much a requirement, heated seats at least in front was a requirement. Rearview camera, HK sound high on the list but not deal breakers. Parking assist didn't care much about.
I'm a car guy, a DIY'er, and have done a lot of work on cars modding and repairing them. But with a kid now and a busier life I decided CPO was a requirement as well. If I'd been buying 10 years ago I wouldn't have cared at all and would gamble with not having it if the price was right. I'd keep looking at local results and jump only when you find what you want at a good price. If your'e kind of questioning what to get, spend a little more time deciding what you must have / want / don't care about. That should help. There will always be more cars for sale! It's easier said than done to wait, but there will be more. |
