What MPG should I expect for a 35i X3
What type of MPG should I be expecting for a X3 35i (US model)? Would I at least get mpg 26+ at 75mph on the freeway?

At 72
I consistently see 27-29 on the interstates, on trips of 250-350 miles. Aside, the dealer gave me a new 2.8 x3 as a loaner the other day, and in the EcoPro mode it was no better than my 3.5, it was brand new, so it might get better with more miles.

MPG depends on your driving habits and the roads in your area. There are too many other factors affects the mileage including passenger/cargo count and weight, altitude etc. On the average 35i should do 2 mpg less based on the rating. Interestingly I find that my 28i gets 31 mpg in the local road when the speed is maintained at 35-40 mph with couple of traffic light and eco mode. n highway at 70-75 miles it gets 27-28 mpg. Note that it is within break-in period.

I only average 22-23 mpg in mixed driving, but I have a heavy foot. This is actual mpg. The computer normally shows 1-2 mpg higher. One of these days, I'm going to try driving like an old lady to see what type of mileage I can get. The main reason I chose this vehicle was because it was so much fun to drive not because of the gas mileage.

Don't know about current BMW's (owned several various models from '96 to '06) but I always found onboard computer to overstate by a couple of MPG and the only way to measure accurately was by using odometer and gas pump volume. Same with my current '09 MB.

I have registered 32.7 mpg at 64 mph on a trip to Portland Or. Once the spped limit changed to 70 mph my mpg started to drop. I set the cruise to 74 and even stop and go traffic in and out of Portland I averaged 27.7 for the entire trip. I have about 10 K on my X3. Mileage is much better than my 95 4Runner!

Posters with 27mpg or higher. I don't how you get that kind of mileage with speeds of 75mph or higher.
Just did 300 miles on PA turnpike from Philly to Pittsburgh (was going 75 on cruise control where possible). Temp outside was 27F - 44F. Trip computer registered 25.3 mpg with avg speed 72. I have 8,000 miles on my X35 (M-sport with 19in tires). Perhaps MPG will get better over time. |

I recently took my X35i on 6000 mile trip touring thru the US west. At 75-80 I consistently got 27mpg on fairly level ground. However, mileage is really dependent on speed and wind conditions as the X3 is a bit of brick, and also on tire pressure and I'm sure road conditions. On a similar trip with first generation X3 mileage varied from 30 or so at 60-65 down to 22 at 80-85. Fuel mileage on the new car is about 2 mpg better. In general, it been my experience that BMWs exceed their highway ratings - this has been true on both of the X3s and the 3 M3s I've owned.
The accuracy of the computer varies somewhat from car to car. In my 35i the discrepancy is only ~ .1%. In the first gen X3 I remember reading about a way to adjust the computer (never tried it myself) and perhaps that's possible in the new car as well. |

A year ago I researched this, and if you look at the graph at the end of the thread "Horsepower & Speed - the Graph" [ http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1004702 ] it shows the data I obtained from our two X3 35i xDr. As others have indicated, many factors go into the final numbers you derive for your own driving environs. Our 'sweet spot' would be to travel around 45-50 mph on level plane.

Digging up an older thread, but I'm curious about some posters' figures. It seems that many of you are experiencing highway figures in the mid-upper 20's when on the highway. I have about 1,200 miles on the OD, and I'm averaging 19 mpg. 80% of my driving is on the highway where the cruise is set to 80. Does the motor need more time to break in?

If you can calculate your mpg strictly for your highway cruise time and then separately for your city driving it might assist you in sorting out the actual impact of each style. |
