X5M/X6M engine in the X3?

Is it physically possible to put the X5M/X6M engine in the X3 without having to do serious modifications to the body and chassis? The F25 in identical in length and width to the E53 X5 and has a similar engine compartment size. The E53 had up to a 4.8L V8 engine so I would think that the F25 (and the upcoming G01) should be able to fit the S63 engine since it's only 4.4L. I'm no gearhead, but thought that it could work. A 500+ hp X3 would be pretty awesome. I know it will never happen, but I figured if Mercedes does it with their AMG engines, maybe BMW can do it, too. What do you guys think?

I can't speak for whether the S63 would fit, but it seems unlikely they would bypass the S55 for the G01's intro year. Out of curiosity I plugged 567 HP into the X3 M's G01 construct in the simulation - top speed unlimited would be 187.8 mph.

Who knows what the future will hold for this competitive segment of the market, though. As technology allows more powerful engines to become smaller, lighter and more efficient, and after the GLC appears in the AMG line, maybe this would be an Ace in the back pocket for BMW.

Thanks Max Well. Yeah, I don't doubt they'll use the S55 if there is an X3M since that's in the M3/M4. I think the S63 would make the X3 too front heavy and maybe that's why they don't put it in the smaller cars. I'm sure many people would love it if they did put that engine in though.

Are you able to get 0-60 and 1/4 mile times from the simulation? Thanks again.

Here you go, Howie Dub. It took me a while as I ran it at a number of settings, but in the end I decided to just plot the 567 HP. As Rob's, Crash's, and jamoka3's stock runs are about -20 HP c/w the Simulation's stock, the 1/4 mile time could be a tad longer at around 12.5 sec and around 121 mph, but this at least gives you a rough idea.
