I have now been playing with the new car .. Does anyone know what range is supposed to be on the find my Bmw app ?

I thought it was within a mile or so ?

Today I have pinged my car from my office in Manchester at

Liverpool airport

My home address

And now at boundary mill at colne

All these locations are 30-50 miles from me

Yes I do know who has the car !

And no I'm not stalking my wife !

No I thought the app told you wherever it is. Mines the same I can ping it from wherever.

Ah right. I think all modern BMWs have at least one embedded M2M SIM module which uses location based services from the mobile network provider to report location. That wouldn't have any sort of range limitation.

RTTI uses every enabled BMW as a source of data (there's a legal section on this in the manual)

Just been on the connected drive web site and a lot if the extras such as activating the BMW remote app you now have to pay for. Only noticed since I have just sold the x3 for an x5 and before there was no cost. Taking the p**** a bit considering the cost of these cars.

Odd - I was on there yesterday as I'd noticed that the Connected app for Android had been updated and wanted to find out if there was a corresponding firmware update. Anyway, the only 2 cost options for me were the music service and internet access both of which look entirely redundant.

I did notice that the site now lists the expiry dates for services bundled with Pro Media in the UK, though. These are all 3 years for me which is rather interesting given that my company car lease is for 4 years. I wonder who is expected to cover the final year?

You can send the command from any where, there is no real restriction unless the car is in motion and then it won't inform you of the location (for the pre LCI and I assume it's the same for the LCI).

It's an interesting app .. And a lot cheaper than a tracker

I find it very slow and clunky this app. Not to sure of the purpose more of a gimmick. Or am I missing something?

At least in the U.S. - the app will not show you the location of the car if you are more than 0.6 miles away for privacy reasons. I guess there is no such restriction outside of the U.S.!

Well after experimenting a bit more with the app. I'm currently 400 miles away from mine and it still locates my car on the app!

That surprised me too .. Especially as bmw were/are charging for tracker apps

I suppose it's no different from the find my iPhone app and probably harder for thrives to disable than the tracker system
