Had sun/moonroofs on the last four daily-drivers. Found we used it less and less. Didn't get one on the X3, don't miss it at all and prefer the look of a solid colored roof panel. The X3 already has too much glass to keep clean! When I need a dose of UV/IR exposure, I go for a ride in the roadster. It has no roof at all.

I love how the Audi q5's moonroof is even bigger though.

Personally I haven't taken it because of few reasons, on my current car, I never really used it, it is easy to break (two times), the black leather gets really hot if you forget the shade when parked. The cost is also prohibitive here 1800$, this is crazy! I agree though for the extra interior light, this is very nice.

Debating on this one. My parents don't really need it, but its disappointing to find out that there's no conventional sunroof, and this one you have to take with a Premium Package.

My last 3 cars had a sunroof and it was great! The X3 was my first car with a panoramic sunroof. I love to keep it open on days where it is a little cloudy and not when the sun is blasting onto the sunroof. It provides some natural lighting to the center of the car and for the rear passengers. At night, it gives a great view of the stars and what not. I keep the shade open most of the time and I think it would be great to have. Me being a "want it all" person made me want to buy this because I don't like seeing the empty slot where the button is supposed to be.

You can open it like a conventional sunroof. You don't have to open it the whole way to the panoramic configuration.

Radioactive's right in that you can open the cover halfway so it's like a conventional sunroof. What he didn't mention however is that even if you want to open the glass the whole way you can't. When you push once the glass slides back just before the middle partition and when pushing a 2nd time it slides back an additional 2 inches or so.

Many X3 buyers on here including myself thought that the panoramic sunroof could slide back all the way exposing the glass above the rear passengers but this isn't the case.

Its more of an issue of want. We definitely won't care for a full pano roof in this case (potentially more issues down the line) but I feel that not taking it will hurt resale down the line.

No sunroof will hurt resale? I seriously doubt it. I've found through owning and selling 3 lightly-optioned B-Cars ("nothing burgers") that you can do very well on resale by having fewer of the crazy-expensive option packages. There are just so many highly-optioned used B-Cars out there, that I can sell my lightly-optioned ones for $1k or so less, and end up doing quite well.

It is true that salesmen typically use the "will hurt resale" line when tempting buyers to heavily option their cars, but that has emphatically not been my experience.

You hardly get anything back from the options on resale unless you sell it yourself. The options help dealers move the used cars, but they affect the price little and only the dealer sees any of the benefit. The cost of options is all about the value to you while you own it.

Love mine, however it's a personal option. My last car did not have it and I sure missed it. If it's not your thing then don't let the dealer up sell you on that option.

thats true. I think I'll wait until a preview of the 2012 equipment list comes out and see (a conventional sunroof is preferred over the panoramic roof)

I would think the odds of being offered a choice of sunroofs is slim to none. Is not going to happen.

Nicely summarized. Sorry for the minor thread hijack. I spend a fair bit of time running around with a bike or three on the roof, and you quickly realize that the moonroof is not as well sound insulated as the standard roof/headliner combo.

Here's the problem. You go to trade-in/sell the vehicle and if you have a sun roof, they'll tell you it doesn't add much value if any. If you don't have a sun roof, they'll tell you they add a lot value and deduct from there.
