What's that sound when you open the door?

What's that hydraulic / gas sound heard after you open / close the doors?

I assume you have the adjustable dampers, as I do. On all the BMWs (5 series loaners and such) I've driven with the adjustable dampers, including my X3, I hear that sound when opening the door or unlocking the car. I believe it's the gas pressure shock absorbers releasing pressure to prepare for proper variability during driving.

On my previous ride (E90 335i) it made teh same sound - it was the fuel pump "priming" in preparation for a startup.

I don't have the adjustable dampers and mine makes that same noise so it's not that.

I have the adjustable suspension on my 550i M sport and believe me if it makes so much a sound it would go back, it's silent.
