hauling longer items in trunk/boot

I have to pickup a piece of furniture that is 41x71x21" WxLxH

I don't mind hanging the piece out the back of the car but I don't know how to stop the power trunk from damaging the furniture.

Also will the trunk bounce up and down (do I have to bungee cord the trunk closed).

Appreciate any assistance.

I will ask for home delivery or rent a truck. Why do you want to take risk with your X3 / furniture? Dont you love your X3 and furniture?

Bungees do not work well for holding down a trunk lid. I would recommend rope or denting the furniture.

As far as the power trunk lid, if you cannot over ride it, you might try disabling it by pulling its fuse.

What good is an SA(U)V if you can't try to stuff some over size furniture in it!

@ Radioactive, That was one of the main reasons for getting a 'truck'... to haul stuff. I know the X3 is more car than truck but I still want to carry stuff home from time to time.

@ April1, I don't want to damage either the car or the furniture, hence the thread here.

I would be less apprehensive if the car didn't have the power trunk...

Any other ideas?

I was being serious! The "A" in SAV means "Adventure" for me, not "Activity", but it's really a utility vehicle for me. I stuff all kinds of crap in mine, but tonight I drew the line when my Dad suggested that I throw a mattress and box spring on top and drive it down to San Diego from Northern California.

Power tailgate is nearly irrelevant to the situation. It's not gonna keep trying to chomp on your furniture. It may well be that it's less prone to bouncing, so once you tie it down -- which you should do -- it'll stay more stable. This said, the X3 is not a furniture hauling machine. You're pushing it beyond its intentions and should adjust your expectations accordingly.

A 4wd that never goes off Tarmac, rear seats and a hatch that fold flat but is never used for storing large items.

Just what is the x3 intended for lol

I hauled a tool shed on the roof of my X3. What's the weight of the furniture? Do you have roof rails and crossbars? How much further does it stick out?

Weight isn't the issue and it'll only stick out about 24" but the liftgate will have to close down on the furniture. I don't have roof rails/crossbars.

My advise is then to pack (blankets? old boxes?) the furniture so the door cannot do damage. You should find a way to secure the furniture and the door completely. No movement allowed. Usually rope will work, but I have not looked at the latching system on the door to see what to tie it to.

The door is designed to stop after a certain amount of pressure is applied.
