2006 X3 3.0 Engine noise at idle

I've veen having an issue with my 2006 X3 3.0 for about 3 weeks now, where the engine makes this high-pitch squealing noise at idle. It sounds like it could be something belts related but when I get real close it almost sounds like it's coming from the valvetrain area.

check out these

Anybody had anything like this happen before? I changed the oil today and checked the air filter and looked around some more but I still can't figure it out.

Any clues any one?

Thanks,

AJ

The video doesn't help that much but from what you decribe my bet would be the belt or the idler pulley bearings.

Thanks!!

hmm yeah After listening to your video, it sounds similar... I didn't know whether to call it a "Squealing" noise or a "chirping" noise, but it definitely happens at idle speeds and is more pronounced when engine is cold.

if it turns out to be the idler pulley bearings, might as well replace belts and idler pulley while I'm at it right. I'm right at 65k. has anyone done this on their own? is it very difficult to do?

It's a fairly straightforward job for the mechanically inclined.

If that's what it is I'd add water pump to that while you're in there. They have been known to fail catastrophically.

You could also pay for a day's access and get what you need from BMW directly if you can't find what you need elsewhere.

Thanks
