Differential Fluids — any upside on having dealer change?
Our 2016 x3 is at 60,000 miles and dealer says we need to change the differential fluids. They’re asking $750.
I called an Instant Oil Change (a chain) location, and their price for this is $218. Obviously I like the lower price. But, that said, is there any reason to have the dealer change the differential fluids instead? The car is no longer under warranty. Thanks! |

No reason to pay high price at Stealer.
Personally I'd not use a quick lube type of place, those young kids are often lacking in mechanical skills....I.e. they can be heavy handed on tightening drain/fill plugs, even stripping threads. Pay a bit more and use a reputable independent BMW/Euro car shop. |

I tried to get a quote for some fluid changes when I was there recently for some warranty work. I was told that, since BMW thinks these are "lifetime" fluids, they don't have a price list. He made some estimates, and said to get a firmer estimate he would have to get with a tech.

I have had 2 bottles of liqui moly 75w90 GL5 for doing this sitting in the garage... I got worried about approvals since I can't find any reliable information on what is exactly needed for these. Would this be acceptable for front and back or do I need 75w85?

both made great points, and sometimes bmw calls for w90 and sometimes it calls for w85.... and if I recall, one supersedes the other I believe in the end, its okay to use either or |
