My Budget Bike Rack

I thought that I would share some pics of my rather crude interior bike rack.

My wife and I ride road bikes and we plan some riding excursions in the near future. In the past, I've used my Prius for this by laying the bikes on top of each other separated by blankets. This is fine for a short trip, but sooner or later, the derailleurs will get mis-aligned. The bigger problem with this setup is that there is almost no floor space for bags, equipment, etc. I.e. stopping at Costco on the way home was a no-no.

I also have a Yakima KingJoe3 rack that fits on the hatchback door, but there's no way to secure the bikes and, if I got rear ended, the bikes are toast.

Although I haven't gone on any trips with this, but it should fit my criteria of greater security and minimal impact on floor space. I was concerned about the bikes sliding forwards or backwards, but I did a panic stop and they didn't move a bit. I'll still probably pile some stuff on the board to ensure that it doesn't move.

In case anyone is interested the bike on the left is my wife's and it's a 44 with 700 wheels. The bike on the right is a 54. I had to lower the seat post on my wife's bike and remove it on mine. The position of the rear wheels do not restrict movement of the front seats at all.

The one downside is that I have to look thru the handlebars when I'm viewing the rearview mirror.

Parts were $40.66 plus tax.

Cliff

Thumbs up

Great Job
May be you can find a way to anchor/secure the base board on the floor for additional safety?
