Angry Email from BMW: No more ConnectedDrive Services Ending 2/2022

Paraphrasing: Due to 3G networks being phased out, the ConnectedDrive services for my car (2015) will end 2/1/22. They are giving those affected a complimentary Connected Package Professional or BMW Assist Safety Plan subscription that will automatically activate until 2/1/22. To receive this, you will need to update the iDrive/Update Services within iDrive.

So, that mean no more RTT (real-time traffic), correct? That's really the only thing that I use nearly daily so that will be a real disappointment if that ends!

Not happy.

Guess emergency support ends well before the 10 years promised. The RTT. And the weather app.

I had hoped that they would come out with an inexpensive LTE upgrade. He he he

What crap. I hope there's an upgrade module that enables LTE or at least 4G so we can get a few more years out of it.

Just an update: today I called the customer service number and spoke with them about this. As I just renewed my RTTI subscription back in September, they gave me a pro-rated refund for both the ConnectedDrive and RTTI subscriptions and I will continue to receive the service for "free" until February. He couldn't be specific but he said that they are looking into an LTE option and we should hear something about it before next February.

LTE is 4G. I hope so too, but I'm not hopeful. At least I'll save the $100 I would have spent for another year in June.

Anything that accesses the data portion of connected drive will be affected. I find it strange because 3G HSPA+ is still well capable and it can perform in some aspects where 4G LTE cannot. The range is one that comes to mind.

ATT wants to free up spectrum for 5G, and not have to support 3 generations at the same time. For everything but the car, it is fine for me. Not happy losing it in the car.

update on connected drive

Got an email from BMW today, saying that my 2016 x3 could not be updated. so I guess they are not looking for a solution? How could there not be any tech upgrade possible? Really disappointing.

"Unfortunately, for your vehicle, there is not a technology upgrade available that would allow you to continue to use ConnectedDrive/BMW Assist services after the expiration of your contract, or February 2022, whichever occurs first."

No, my MY'13 only had 2G and I lost Assist and ConnectedDrive at the end of 2016.

I have upgraded my 3G TCB to 4G ATM by moving sim card over. Everything works, at least in Europe. Except that I only get those connected drive services for which I had unlimited subscription. But I cannot buy any new subscriptions. Wonder if I call BMW and tell them what I did if they will enable me to purchase new subscriptions? Has anyone had such experience?

Yes - they will not respond to my inquiries at all - they are just plain ignorant - they told me to email BMWAssist who told me to email Cust Relations, who said contact the dealer, who never got back to me. Let me know if you get anywhere - I got zilch
