I was relieved, yet annoyed, to find out that I was not alone. I actually took my 2013 X3 in for service because I thought that it sounded like an old diesel Mercedes. I had a 2006 325i that would start to make that sound when I needed an oil service so I automatically thought that there was something wrong with my new X3. I was in disbelief when my service guy told me that was normal. I honestly thought that he was lying and I was going to take it to a different dealership's service department for a second opinion. I was bummed that the car I have waited so long to get sounds a little clunky...but that aside, it has been pretty amazing. I'm learning to get used to it and enjoy the ride.

My 35i has one of the sweetest sounding engines I've ever heard. It's a real gem. Every time I start it I have to grin a little. I was parked next to a 28i with my window down when a lady started it, and it didn't have that satisfying throaty growl that mine does.

Having owned mine now for about two months (and after break-in) I started to hit it now and again,... holy crap, what a melodious sound!... and I even got 23 mpg combined on last tank.
