Buy my 2012 X3 or lease a 2016 X3 35i?

I currently drive a 2012 X3 28i that I LOVE. M package, handles beautifully etc. My lease is almost up, and I test drove the 2015 X3 28i. The 4 cylinder engine felt underpowered to me, but I really liked the 2015 X3 35i.

Do I buy my current car off lease, or lease the 2016 35i? I've never owned a car before. Monthly payment would be about the same. Any thoughts on buying a car off a lease? What did you do after the 6 year CPO warranty expired? Thanks!

I have the same dilemma - love my '13 X3 35i and the lease will be up in Nov.

Right now, '16 residuals are very bad - 52% for 36 months/15k/yr. So, If you are talking RIGHT NOW, you are better off not leasing a new one. It'll be a lot more expensive for the same car.

If you can wait a month or so, I think the residuals will come up.

But.... I'd keep what you love. Just make sure the price is right.

Monthly payment is the same, but because you're buying, you'll have equity when you decide to trade in the car. Leasing, at the end, you'll walk away with nothing.

But you're comparing buying the 28i to leasing the 35i. It's not really a fair comparison.

Buying it out is much cheaper.

"Payments are the same" but one is a loan and the other a lease. One nets you something of value and the other nets you nothing.

If you can write off lease payments against your business, then always lease. In almost every other case, you need to use some fancy justification to explain how a new car is a better "financial move" than a used car, but people on this forum do this all the time...

It doesn't always come down to what's most financially sound, or most of us wouldn't be here in the first place

If you still love your old car, I'd definitely keep it. You won't be paying for the depreciation on the new car (which is far and away the most expensive element of car ownership in the long run) and since you are happy with your car, there is no good reason not too keep it.

Schmed how do you know residual for 2016 models? Looking to lease a 2016 X3, what is residual, money factor, etc? I will be going to dealer later today but would be nice to know before hand

I was quoted 52% residual for 15k/year and 36 months residual. 55% residual for 2015s.

Money factor quoted was 0.0015, but I think BMW FS can get that down to 0.0013. My sales guy said he could probably get me to that base MF. I said that was good, because otherwise, I'm not a buyer.

I'm of the mind set of figuring out what you want. If the 2016 doesn't have anything that you want or must have that your 2012 can't reasonably get, then it wouldn't make sense to jump to a 2016. Then you figure out if leasing or buying (whichever model) works out better for you. It just sounds like you have multiple things being compared simultaneously which makes it difficult. Different model year, model, leasing/financing terms.

Congrats. I have a the 2013 X3 35i M with DHP and I love it and I will also be in your dilemma come October/November. I think I will wait until the 2017 X3 is out which is the new one. I may try to extend my lease at least until June, so I can get 1st allocations for the new model, so exciting. It will take 3 months to build probably, so I'll have to be very patient
