I've got a Thule and have mounted it forward to clear the rear hatch

I have a Thule too. it is mounted forward clear the rear hatch but this makes it noisey as it now hangs over the windscreen. not sure what model it is as I borrowed it from my brother. It's obviously too long for the x3 he has a Mazda cx9

Some more info here. I went for the cheaper option (as recommended in first link). All good after quite a few trips

We are borrowing a Yakima Rocket Box from a friend of mine this week. Install was easy, no wind noise, and lets all 5 of us plus a dog take a bunch of crap up to the mountains. Plus, I think the white/black looks good with my Alpine White X3
It's mounted fairly far back because I didn't want to move my Thule cross bars. To keep the hatch from hitting it, I have it set to only open a fraction of the normal amount.

This one is mine - shown on my old E83, the principle is the same.
The box is mounted so that when the tailgate is open there's 20mm clearance between the back of the box and the spoiler. The front over hang isn't an issue from either weight or vision. It's a Thule 700 Evolution approx 2.25m long fitted to BMW rails with the Thule T-Bar fitting system which I highly recommend to cut down wind noise.

I went to both EMS and REI to get their opinion. Apparently, most boxes will hang over the windshield, bounce in the wind, and drop your mileage from what they said. Okay....I'm still in.
I ordered a thule force, alpine. |
