Trouble with Smartphone Integration

When I snap my iphone 3gs into the cradle of the smartphone dock, it shows the song playing on the screen, but there is no sound from the speakers. I don't have anything plugged in to the USB port and I have the bluetooth turned off on the phone (per the instructions). Has anyone been able to get this to work? Bluetooth works fine, but I would like to use the dock on longer road trips as it also charges the phone. Any advice would be appreciated.

Gently continue to knob up the volume until you start to hear it. There is, what I assume to be, a comfort feature that prevents the music from suddenly blaring as you pull your of a parking space, so as not to startle you into the back of another car.

Someone else had the same problem but not sure if any of the proposed solutions worked. Let us know how you get on

Check your insert. There is a version that provides only power and antenna and no audio interface.

I tried the volume, but still no sound. Will check with the dealer to see if my insert supports audio.

I should have added that I don't know how to distinguish between the inserts, but I had a no audio one and the new one is en route.

There are several different versions of the cradles for iPhones, this sounds like a case for the wrong version. Make sure you have/get the one for the 3Gs version for media (music and phone integration) You can check the part numbers at Tisher (getbmwparts.com)

If you get an adaptor that works, please let me know the part number. I have the same issue and the part number on the back is:

The part number on the back is 84.21-2 158 683-01

Thanks much

Still no solution

After spending three hours at my BMW dealership on Saturday morning, and with no less than four BMW sales and service people looking at it, I still have no solution to the smartphone integration problem. I had them check the part number for the snap-in adapter that I purchased and it is supposed to support both the telephone and music (media). Bottom line...it doesn't work. It shows the track that is playing on the screen, but no sound comes out of the speakers. We tried every possible configuration. The BMW "experts" were as befuddled as I was.

I decided to return the snap-in adapter and use the "y" cable in the USB port in the armrest /console. If anyone is considering the smartphone integration, I would submit the following "cons" -- (in addition to the fact that it probably won't work)-- You have to take the phone out of the case every time you want to put it in the dock, and the dock itself takes up most of the storage space in the console.

This is exactly why I never understood the appeal of this option. I store a lot of junk in the console. I kinda need that space.

I think that volume wise it's only using a relatively small % but I can see it being annoying if you want all that space and you don't want to have open the lid and then open the inner cradle to get at what's underneath.

I hope my iPhone 4 cradle works. I have the cradle installed but not iPhone 4 until next month.

Nahoa has music working OK with his iPhone 4 cradle.

@ Lesa: do you have pro sat nav? There seems to be some differences re. volume settings between cars that do and cars that don't

I don't use a case for my iPhone, just a slim leather pouch which always needs to be taken off to use it so I don't have the permanent case annoyance. The other major advantage and a bigreason for me to use the cradle is that the phone's signal is boosted by the car's antenna/aerial.

There's 3 cradles per phone

Standard
Music
Media

You must use media since your car has combox.

All 3 cradles should be available for 3GS now. Your parts department will have a detailed document from BMW describing each cradle, what it does and what it is compatible with.

There are three? I only know of 2 cradles for the iPhone. From the BMW accessories website (OK, this is UK but I doubt the Apple integration will be different):

Snap-in adapter

A docking system suitable for current Apple, Nokia, Motorola and Sony Ericsson handsets, and for RIM BlackBerry® devices. With the interchangeable phone-specific snap-in adapter, drivers can charge their mobile phone via the mobile phone preparation with Bluetooth interface. An external aerial ensures the best possible reception at all times. For Apple iPhone 3G S and iPhone 4 handsets, a snap-in media adapter is also available. In addition to the basic functions of the snap-in adapter, this also enables music files stored on the device to be played over the vehicle's audio system, and shows the cover artwork on the control display

Snap-in media adapter

A sturdy and secure docking system for the Apple iPhone 3G/3G S, with a holder specifically designed for the BMW model in question. An external aerial ensures the best possible reception at all times. With a USB interface to connect the device's music player to the vehicle's audio system, with no cable required, allowing playback of music files through the vehicle's loudspeakers. The cover artwork for the track currently playing is shown on the vehicle's display, so you can see right away what artist or album you are listening to.

Not sure where the music cradle fits into this (perhaps this is for old models with no combox?) but this is all pathetically confusing and BMW really should sort it out

And there is still no media snap-in adapter available for iPhone 4 . Quite why it takes a year to produce is beyond me.

@ Lesa: I would recommend posting the part number here and getting someone who knows what they are doing (i.e. not the people at your dealership who wasted hours of your time) to check that it's correct. If it is, you must have a connection or hardware problem which they should fix for free under warranty.
