X3 with weird engine noise?!

Hey guys! Well I have an 05 X3 with the 3.0 and I have this noise happening...I've been around BMW's my whole life and this one is stumping me...I really really don't think it's a rod knock it sounds like the timing chain to me but I can't be sure. It changes tone every once and awhile and the engine is not shaking or anything, any thoughts? Thanks in advance

Timing chain flapping around on the guides ?
If car is idling OK, possibly ruling out push rods, valves etc...
That's my 2 cent `bush mechanic` advice.

Ya it idles like a champ...we have it about torn down so when I get the timing cover off I'll let you know, thx for the input

Did a DIY a while ago on my ex 530 with the M54 B30 engine - similar to yours.
Replaced the tensioner springs - they were a bit compressed compared to new ones, and after installing them, all noise was gone. here is the link, but the pics are gone - photobucket don't allow for hosting anymore
