35d

Could any one explain to me what differences in specification there are between the 3.0d and 3.5d engines that give rise to the power difference. It is very hard to decode the BMW speak on this subject.
Many thanks.

35d has a small turbo for low revs and a larger one for higher revs. The small turbo blows through the bigger one which gets engaged as revs rise. Power and torque are improved but the main improvements are in response and less peaky power delivery.

30d single turbo
35d twin turbo

It is confusing when you see 30d engine pics and the engine cover on the 30d says twinpower turbo. Is that bmw speak for twin scroll?

35D May also be known as the 40D in other countries - e.g. South(ern) Africa.

The twin power label on the 30d is confusing. I don't believe it is twin scroll. My previous X3 was a 30d, with the single large turbo it is still very good indeed. If you come from a sporty car you may appreciate the 35d a bit more. If you lease your X3 and you are getting an MSport you may find the extra payments for a 35d are minimal.

And of course what compounds this engine designation is BMW's habit of calling the same engine in different markets by a different name. With our F25 X3 the "28d" in the US market is of course the "20d" in most other markets (although the US 28d is the old pre-LCI N47 diesel while outside the US the post-LCI 20d is the new B47 engine). And for the current model (F15) X5, in the US market the 35d is the single turbo 30d used in other markets. And in the US market this 35d should not be confused with the 35d used in the previous E70 X5 which was a twin-turbo diesel. Perfectly clear isn't it.

In the UK and many other markets the engine called a 35d in the X3 is the same twin turbo as found in the X5 40d in the same markets!
