Apple CarPlay

Anyone heard about Apple CarPlay integration in the new X3 2015?

I strongly doubt that the LCI will have it, but it would be nice to have proper iPhone integration!

I am about to pull the trigger on placing an order for a 2015 x3. I'm pretty excited about trying the PDC delivery.

One thing I'm not sure on is if there is a particular option I need to make sure I get in order to be able to use CarPlay in the future, assuming BMW enables this on the 2015 model. For instance, you could enable CarPlay in the 2015 model as long as you have the ____ option installed. Perhaps the Enhanced USB and Bluetooth plus smartphone integration option?

Thanks for any insight. When I called the dealer they didn't know.

Probably you would need all the technology options. But I really doubt that BMW will upgrade our system. How often does an auto company provide a real update after the car is made?

It depends on if Carplay requires additional hardware or it's a firmware update.

My thought is if you have all the tech options then it *should* be just a firmware upgrade... But then it's another way to force people to but a new car.

There doesn't seem to be much concrete info on it other than it's coming to some cars (Volvo - I assume the new XC90, Mercedes and Ferrari) this year.

My guess is that CarPlay will not be something that can be implemented via a firmware update. Apple will likely have more stringent requirements with respect to hardware and software to insure that the user experience meets their standards. If I were Apple, I'd have a set of expectations in terms of touchscreen or control stick and video processing speed. Even though much of the computational load has been shifted to the iPhone, the system will probably need to be able to handle the complex interactions that are responsible for creating such a fluid and dynamic interface.

BMW. And since for 2015 they already upgraded the system, I wouldn't expect another one soon.

And the X3 seems to get updates after the other models, like the 3 series.
