BM3 stage 2 underwhelming?

Hey all. Got my 2018 x3 M40i about a month ago. My first bmw and loving it.

So far got CTS catted downpipe installed (aware it’s a “meh” DP) and yesterday I tuned BM3 stage 2 91 octane (with shell 93 in the tank). Went with 91 as I read that here in Ontario Canada our gas sucks and 93 gas on a 93 tune may not run well but happy to have my mine changed.

With that said. I’m underwhelmed. It feels faster but doesn’t at the same time it’s weird.

I Just took my brother for a ride for a 2nd opinion and he said it seems less punchy then before. Feels like power band is smoothed out but almost makes it less exciting and of course that pissed me off lmao

So, where do I go from here? Logs? I’m new to the tuning thing so figured I’d as some of the experts here. All I know is I expected a bigger jump from stock to stage 2.

Thanks in advance!
J

Definitely post logs. WOT, 3rd or 4th gear, from 2.5k rpm up to rev limit. And at least include:

Actual boost & boost target
Ignition Timing
Ignition Timing corrections
knock
Throttle angle
Actual torque & torque target

On my gen2 B58, a proper loaded BM3 map should (from DME reading, not real dyno measurement)
580Nm and 400 hp on stage 1 ACN91
640Nm and 470 hp on stage 2 93
660Nm and ~500hp on stage 2 E30

do you have dragy? what is the 1/4 mile trap speed? it's easy to tell what was picked up over the stock car that way...logs and dyno's are strictly numbers on paper but actual performance #s are reality...

Is the downpipe your only hardware mod to call it stage 2
Anything on the intake? Chargecooler / intercooler / pipes / whatever?
fuel pump /turbo.. anything else

I'd start with a speed shop with a dyno and a knowledge of German cars or at least a tuner who can alter files to suit the dyno logs.

With tuned diesels the tune settles down after a few drives and the tune gets more responsive and car feels faster. This is due to the fuel trims and various compensations in the mapping which need a few drive cycles to settle.
Not sure if it's the same with the B58 but don't see why not.
Keep driving it for a few days and get the downpipe hot!

I don't know about that particular tune package however I can offer some basic advice. Whenever you're working with the tune always start at the minimum tune with a full run at wide open throttle. Send that log to the tuner and let them look it over and make recommendations. If they say it's okay to move to the next stage then do so and perform the same test run. Never use a stage of tune for daily use until you know it's okay. Running lower quality fuel or lower octane fuel is always a risk for knock, especially when you turn up the Boost. Knock will destroy your motor over time so do it right the first time.

Definitely post logs. You can post them here if you want I'm happy to review them.

I've has Stage 1 > Stage 2 > Stage 2+ on MHD and BM3. (I'm now on an aftermarket turbo and custom flex fuel tune). In general I've found that on pump gas 91, when moving from stage 1 to stage 2:
1.) Stage 2 hits higher boost at lower RPM, but then trails off in higher RPM like Stage 1 because the stock turbo can't flow big volumes at higher pressure to support higher RPMS. This higher torque hit in the lower RPMs from Stage 2 almost makes it feel slower because it trails off a lot as you rev out.
2.) Stage 2 is pretty aggressive, and you may be getting more timing corrections and actually ending up with the same or lower power than stage 1.

Anyways, happy to review logs.

As a side note regarding the car. It has 73,000km on it (45k miles) and service records show spark plugs were changed at 68k (42k miles) at bmw dealership. Was going to upgrade to NGK 94201 but these are so new so if I can wait I will

I have checked some of the logs

In general your timing corrections are very clean. Somehow I don't understand why corrections show as positive values, which do not make physical sense. But since your Timing Readings are mostly good enough (~12 degree at 6500RPM) and are the same on all cylinders, which usually indicate no cylinder suffers any individual correction (otherwise they can hardly be all equal). I think either BM3 or DME has a bug when reporting the corrections here.

Your DME reported torque is around 570Nm ~ 3000 to 4500rpm in best cases, and 425hp ~ 6100rpm. I am not sure these are within the ballpark of gen1 B58 with stage 2 multimap. They are lower than my Gen2 B58 with stage 2 93. But they are very consistent across all these runs, which is good

One thing may be of a bit concern is your fuel pump dips and deviates largely from target values right after the shift. Someone may say that's the sign of a HPFP crash when it cannot support enough fuel. That may need answers from gen1 B58 users.
