Rust proofing on the 2017 x3?
Hi everyone,
I am wondering if it's necessary to rust proof the underbody of my x3? Like spraying rust-proof based spray underneath the x3, is it recommended? I live up north in Canada and we see a lot of snow, and some parts of Canada use salt so that is why I think it's best to do rust-proofing on my x3. With all that plastic covering most of the underbody (I noticed when my x3 was on the hoist), is it worth doing the rust-proof on the 2017 x3's??? Please let me know what you guys and gals think... Any input is highly appreciated. |

How long are you planning on keeping the vehicle? 4 or 5 years? Or less? If so, I wouldn't bother

These vehicles go through a comprehensive corrosion protection application and typically the body panels don't easily rust. You may end up causing rust by applying rust proofing unless properly applied to spotless sheet metal. Just use a pressure washer on the undercarriage at the end of salt season.

My X3 looks fine, minor rust on the control arms, that's about it. I had all the underbody plastic panels off too, no rust, but a couple of the screws that secure the panels in place were rusty. I regularly wash it though in the winter and get in the wheel wells with the sprayer, probably helps. The challenge with underbody coating is you would need to drop all the plastic panels, which already keep salt and road debris off the metal panels. The screws holding them in place are isolated from the body with plastic clips that the screws screw into, so there's no metal on metal there. Suspension components are most at risk of rusting IMO.

I'm not sure yet if I'm keeping my x3 long term, maybe sell before it hits 200,000KM.
Yes, I've heard that also, but wanted to verify, most of the underbody is protected with all that plastic. I will just wash the underbody instead of rust-proofing. Lol buy Tesla? maybe in the future. Yes, I noticed the anti-icing liquid they started with. I seen a few in Ontario already. Hopefully they stop using salt/rocks/sand... The suspension components are the only ones exposed to rust, I'll leave it as is, and just do underbody pressure washing as suggested by Pungo and 6MT_Addict. Thank you everyone for your feedback! Highly appreciated as always!!! Take care and drive safe. |

I spray a salt corrosion inhibitor on exposed undercarriage fasteners, suspension components and other vulnerable parts prior to winter each year. It's meant for marine applications, but works well for automotive as well. It has done well to reduce corrosion, I really hate rusted fasteners

Well explained by all. Thanks for sharing. How about applying WD40 in rusted suspension components and plastics underneath of x3 2013? I also see rust on metal components.

I live in New England, USA and we get some shi__y weather and tons of salt. I have 2 BMWs 1 has 160000 on her. She is a 1999 328i convertible that was driven all year round. No rust. My second is a 2013 x3 with 130000 and no rust. All I have done is wash them . Once a month or 1 a week depending on the weather. So I guess you can say I drove 290000 and just took care of them. By the way I do not have a garage. The convertible had a car cover on her. I'd say just keep it clean and they will treat you right
