Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 SUV

I am looking into different winter tires for trips up north as ski season approaches and typically have had success with Blizzak's on past cars (subaru outback) but has anyone used or tried the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 SUV on a f25 BMW X3? how do they compare?

Best overall snow tire you can get for the X3 IMHO. Turns the X3 into a snow tackling monster. In all kinds of conditions last year, only once did I feel a tiny slip and it was doing 30mph on 6" of snow around a corner. Three times last year came home to 2-3ft of plowed pile at end of driveway, 6-15" of snow on the driveway, which has about a 20 degree incline, and the X3 barreled through it and right up the driveway without hesitation.

Bavarian Autosport sells them mounted and balanced on OEM wheels. They're on sale at the moment, I believe.

I dont see that the sizes of my OEM tires and what Nokian offers entirely match up...I have stock 17's on the car now with te factory runflats. What size Nokians did you go with? Really excited to get this tire - but if i go with a taller sidewall will i need to find a way to re calibrate the Speedometer etc?

I have experience with Blizzaks or Hanooks on past cars - but there is nothing like a Nokian and Im really excited to hear it turns the X3 into a beast!

Mine are 245/50/18 RFT.

In addition to the Hakka/R2 Nokian also has all weathers (not dedicated snows) WRG2/3 & wra3. Hopefully in 17 and as either RFT, depending on ones needs.

Hakka's are in a different league. Ideal for NE in that they perform well on cold dry pavement, are quiet, fuel efficient and- thanks to the unique Cryo Crystal tread compound- offer unparalleled grip in snow (something few, non-studded tires can say).

If want RFTs R2s, you'll need to pick up a set of 18" wheels as the Hakka's only come in an X3-suitable size of 245/45R18.

I picked up a set for my in laws (who live on the North Shore) last winter from Direct Tire and Auto. None of the Nokian dealers I called to had them in stock (in the requisite size), but all were able to get them within 24-48 hours.

http://www.nokiantires.com/winter-ti...kapeliitta-r2/

Good luck.

thanks for all the advise. I just swapped out the chrome grill for a black grill with chrome trim on my space gray X3. Now thanks to your advise i think I will go with 17" - Hakkapeliitta R2 Tires with Beyern Mesh Wheels - Bavarian Autosports has the deal you were mentioning!

anyone have picture of an X3 with Beyern Mesh rims?

Before you buy, you should see if they'll sub for the Spartan or other Beyran wheel.

Before they take your money the 17 are not the SUV Hakka tire line, as the SUV line are more for the larger 19"plus sizes. Yes good prices at Bavarian. When I checked they were the Hakka not the Hakka R2. I see some of the reviews stating that HakkaR2 is better.
Check the price difference, if too much then Hakka is ok. I like the Beyern Mesh

One bad is hydroplaning:

Great set up.

I have Hakkapeliitta R2 (non-SUV and non-RFT).

To me it seems non-SUVs are better overall winter tyres.

R2 SUVs are just to handle more weight and to be stiffer under the weight. You can see that the thread symmetry is totally different in R2 and R2 SUV.

Second winter now starting with Hakkapeliitta R2s

Agree- seems like the R2 load rating is just fine for the X3 (which weighs about as much as the average late model Volvo sedan).

Just so you know, I had Hakka R2 RFT on my previous F30. So when I got the X3 I looked into getting the same. I saw they were manufacturing the R2 and R2 SUV. I checked with Tire Rack and Nokian directly and both told me that for an X3, R2 are sufficient as the load rating is more than enough.
Sadly, Nokian are very hard to get in Canada, so for this year, I will go with Blizzak WS80. I expect they will be comparable.

For Canada Kal tire is the importer. I bought from my tire guy.
18 inch are available
I agree it can be difficult getting some, for example rft in different types I.e. wra3, wrg3. Also mine came from Edmonton so add another App $50 freight per tire. Interesting that Consumers Report 2013 rated perelli winter sottozero II same overall rating as hakka R. However. Sotto's had higher snow rating whereas HakkaR had higher ice rating. Hydroplaning was poorly rated for Hakka.R

Yup, I know. I would rather have Hakkas R2. I really liked them. The problem is that on top of the difficulty to get them, I wanted to go to non RFT and I didn't want to be stuck and have to find and wait for Hakkas to come in if I had to replace one. Blizzak are much easier to find.
Also, I found while talking to Nokian that they do not allow sales of their tires online. This is why you rarely or never see them advertised on Tire Rack, 1010, or other online vendors. It doesn't mean thy cannot get them, but you can't buy online. I am not sure why it is, but in this day and age, I think they seriously limit themselves.

That may be there policy...but (at least in the US) there are a handful of online vendors. Such as:

I wanted the wra3 but thought a replacement would take too long from Virginia, then I toyed with buying 5 tires, then thought that after some mileage, maybe a flat s/be replaced in pairs. So I decided on hakka r2 18's same as current wheels, can use a/s for emergency. Never thought tires would be such a time consumer.

PMC Tire: Nokian tyres leadership has decided to refuse online sales of their tires. They want to enforce their garage reserved sales territories. This means that Quebec's distributors are not allowed to sell any Nokian tires to online business, including us. No Delivery.

Mge.92, thanks for your kind offer and reaching out, nice to receive your offer, perhaps someday I will take you up on it.

My dealer has my Hakka's, and just waiting for the switch over.
I could list 3 additional issues with the NOKIANs, I hope the winters are worth it.
In fairness, Kal Tire sells & stocks more in the NON-RFT.

Also, Bridgestone ( I believe), closed down the Mississauga or Brampton warehouse and tires come from the states, hence wait times.

Guys,
I am looking at replacing my stock Goodyear LS2 with Nokian WRA3 RFT's and run it all year long. A local tire shop can get me the tires in a couple of days.

Does any of you guys have them on their X3's?

I have heard the Snow/ice traction is good with little road noise and good tread wear.
But the wet handling was not rated high.

What do you guys think? How do you like it?
