I also looked at the X5 35iM but BMW will be introducing its successor in a few month and I found the M40i more enjoyable to drive.

Love the acceleration and great handling of the M40i. An amazing engine and handling is what sets this SUV apart from most of its competitors in this class.
Like the ride of the Adaptive M suspension.

Coming from a larger vehicle its interior feels a tad cramped but still larger than the Macan S on my short list.
Wish the interior had a bit more storage space. Glove box is tiny and center console is average in size at best.
Would not re-order the spare. It takes up too much room.

IMHO the M40i represents a better value proposition when compared the to Macan S or the AMG43.

I just remembered...............the "red" appeared when my wife plugged her phone into the USB by the charging plate. Perhaps you can't use both at the same time?

I removed that option (300) today, from my build. Seems like that extra 3" and 'lip' will make inserting big cargo a bit more difficult vs. a flat floor.

This sounds crazy, but I think I want a hitch-based "shelf" that I can put large items on. Like maybe a live Christmas tree, extra luggage, or box that has a dimension too big to fit inside. Any ideas?

You mean something like this?

BTW, I see you sold your fairly new M3 in your signature. Just curious why you are making the switch to an X3. You will not be disappointed in the X3 M40i but it is no M3. Can't wait to hear your opinion when you get yours.

This won't hold a tree, but once considered it for travel.

Yes that’s exactly what I’m thinking of. Where do you buy something like that?

I like the M3, but was ready for a change after 2 years. My daily commute has bad roads, and the M3 rattles like a box of rocks. Plus, my infotainment was basically useless, as plugging in my iPhone via USB would make the idrive do crazy things. I’m sure this is an iOS issue, because it used to work fine. Also, just been needing a bit more room in the back, and my kids are getting bigger. I got to drive the M40i. After a short drive, it didn’t seem as sporty as the F26 M40i, but maybe I just needed to mess with the settings.

Yep. Looking for something like in the post above, but I can see the usefulness of that.

They do fit, though.

If you are getting rid of the RFT's, then I would go ahead and get it. If you are getting it as just an extra precaution (as I did), then you might think twice about it.
Think i asked you, but will your golf bag fit in diagonally in the trunk (corner to corner), without taking any clubs out, and without using the cubbies?

Oh no, I have included the space saver in my build.

Does anybody have a picture of the boot space with it included?

Thanks

Yes, it fits easily. Would be hard to fit multiple sets that way. I posted another pic in the "M40i Delivered" thread that shows four bags in the back. I had to remove the drivers for that to work, though.

You keeping it RB? Test drove the 20D MSport today, thoroughly impressed, lovely car. Your M40i will be a beast

PS 6minutes into this video you can see the spare wheel, enclosure and mini step etc. Not too bad really, doubt anyone would notice the space, just can you live with the step (how often does anyone slide something heavy in?)

I am on the same boat. Deciding between an X6 Msport or X3 M40I.

Does anyone know the hidden differences apart from the obvious in equipment? Does the x6 have better materials quality? More sound deadening? A better suv? I know the x3 would be faster and more agile, but where I live the roads are awful so it is not so important.

Going to keep the spare. May switch to non RFT, so spare will provide added security if anything happens.

Always noticing new things. I just realized today that the parking sensor sounds seem to have a surround sound where you can hear the direction of the obstruction.

Loving this car. I’m just getting to the point where I’m starting to feel comfortable tossing it around, got a few miles on and opening it up a bit. It’s the perfect size, not so small it lacks utility and not so big that it feels sluggish or unresponsive. It feels like a cross between a 340i wagon and an M3 wagon, with some additional clearance so you don’t have to worry about hitting on speed bumps and things, adds an element of toughness/imperviousness to an otherwise sporty feeling car.

I’m in love with the color and the looks, it makes me smile every time I see it in the garage. So far the blue seems like it stays clean pretty well, had a snowy wet day or two and it still shines.

I feel exactly the same. I finally let mine get wet last week as we'd had perfect clear weather for the prior several weeks. Despite that, it still looks great, which is good since it looks like we're in for a rainy next 10 days and I won't get a chance to wash it before our Christmas company arrives!!
