Took delivery today

Picture taken during a fill up on the way home

Happy so far with the car, and hope it stays that way

Quick question, I forgot to take my flash drive with me during delivery. When I play around with the car at home, I tried plugging in the usb flash drive filled with mp3 files and it doesn't seem to recognize the drive. Do I miss any steps required to play music off usb flash drives? I haven't tried my iPhone since I don't have Y cable and no "technology package" on mine.

In iDrive; CD/Multimedia > External device > and the usb logo greyed out and says "not connected"

Update: I tried connecting my external harddrive and it works. I wonder why it won't recognize the flash drive. At least I'm glad the problem is not the car.

Did you insert the flash drive correctly? The metal part should be facing down. The same issue happened to me when I first got my car last week. Once I re-inserted the flash drive correctly iDrive immediately recognized the device.

If you had a iPhone you can also try streaming music via bluetooth. The only problem is the control function only works from the phone, not iDrive.

I think i did insert it correctly, but I'll try again later see if I got it wrong. Thanks

Which USB port did you use, the one in the console or the one in the glove compartment?

The one in the console. My external drive works fine too. I'm gonna try again later see if I connect it right.

Just for giggles, try the one in the glove box.

+1.

You need to use the one in the glove box to transfer your mp3 files to the hard drive. You can not play them from there only transfer.

Talk about downgrading the spec to bare minimum.. i don't appear to have glove box usb port Can't say i'm surprised though, other manufacturers here do it all the time, premium brand or not.

Here's my usb sticking in the center console compartment..

and the iDrive screen

I'm pretty sure I connected it right, since it won't even plug if i flip it. It's probably the flash drive, I'm going to buy another flash drive see if that works. At least my external HDD is detected, so I can still play music from it.

Thank you guys

It could be the format of the flash drive, ie fat32 or a unix file system for mac. What type of computer is your primary (w/OS) and have you used the flash drive before?

It's fat32. I'm using my Windows 7 laptop to format the drive and fill it with mp3 files, and yes it's been used before. I'll try reformatting the flash drive see if it works then
Thanks

Congrats powertech83. Looks fantastic. First Indonesian XBimmer member delivery?

No idea on the USB by the way. Should work as others have suggested. Try reformatting and just add one folder to see if it ever gets recognised

It still doesn't work, I'm just going to try getting another usb flash drive just to see if it works. I need a bigger one anyways

I have the same usb stick... but the red one is on the top...

may be u put the usb in upside down... and forced it in... could have damaged the port...

I will try to attach a pic... as I said, I have the same drive.. red color should be on top...

Yes actually that's weird. Mexxdude also mentioned the metal on the usb should be facing down, but I believe on my car the metal on the usb should be facing up to connect. I couldn't even plug it in with the red side up.

Here's my setup with my external hdd

and the iDrive detected it right away

I guess for now I'm just going to use my external drive. It's my old drive and didn't use it as often anymore.
Oh yeah one question, is it safe if i leave my hdd plugged in to the car? I'm worried it will drain the car's battery somehow.
