Don't understand time frames?

I have been looking at a few threads here and I don't quite understand how one person who orders on 4/18 and has a status of "In Production", and another who orders on 4/12 and has a status of "On Order"? One is a 35i and one is a 28i but both have the same options.

Does the volume of cars a dealership sells play a part in it?

Many times it depends on the allocation to the dealer and what slots the dealer has available. A dealer can pull a dealer ordered car and put in place a special order car. I'm sure the BMW can rack and stack the production order if any part supply problems arise. I ordered my car on April 9th, the dealer pull a slot and my car went into production on the 12th. Out of production 18th and according to the phone line as of yesterday "at the dock, waiting for shipping". ETA of May 5th for west coast distribution. I hope!

As mentioned it all comes down to allocation slots. When I first ordered a 35i my dealer asked me if I'd rather get a 28i because they had a slot for it, I said no and instead waited for the 35i. The difference between the two cars was 2-3 weeks so dealer allocation seems to be the main factor in which you'll receive your car. "On Order" seems to depend on the dealership but after that expect 1-1.5 weeks for vehicle production then 1-3 weeks depending on which state you live.

BMW Centers of Excellence

Slot allocation to dealers may have something to do with their standing with BMW USA. I bought my X3 from a dealer that had recieved the BMW Center for Excellence award in 2010. Placed my order on April 1st and I'll be able to pick it up on Saturday May 7th. Exactly 5 weeks!

I thought it was something like that. I mentioned that when I ordered my car and the dealer told me...they had room and it would be ready in 3-5 weeks. I still have my hopes up for the 5 week mark!
