Sunroof diffuser noise level
I hardly drive with the sunroof open in any car I have owned. I'm surprised how insanely loud it is with the X3 though. The mesh diffuser that pops up makes an awful lot of noise to the point I doubt I'll ever have it open. What are your thoughts?

Without this "diffuser" the buffeting is just unbearable. Keep it up or deal with the unbearable buffeting sound (noticeably even at 40 mph or so)!

Eventually you'll get use to it, not that there's any alternative.
I agree that it's bad design to have a mesh diffuser and was really surprised by how loud it was the first time I opened the sunroof. I'm not sure why BMW chose to use a mesh diffuser versus a triangle-shaped hard plastic one seen on some BMWs. My last two cars had hard plastic diffusers and it seemed much quieter than the mesh. BTW, do you guys ever drive with the sunroof open over 40 mph? I'm worried that if I do it often enough the mesh diffuser will rip or tear due to the strain from air resistance. |

Only open the roof to the 1sr position and / or open a rear window half an inch.

I quite agree. But what annoyed me the most is that it acts like an insect net at night. One drive up the Yarra Valley at night and it was full of insects! But whilst the noise is annoying somewhat, you don't notice it with the music playing at normal levels. But our Boxster is quieter with the roof down than the noise the mesh makes with the roof open. Strange.
