Thanks n55x3!

I guess I was trying to solve the unsolvable....an all season tire that really works in the snow. Looks like dedicated snow tires are preferable.

N55 x3. The Bridgestone's are more responsive than the DWS you think? from an x3 standpoint? I would love to get Michelin's on my next BMW

I think that's a double edge sword though as I ended up ditching the DWS tires since they felt so fluffy and non responsive. I think the softer rubber really killed turn in feel and general handling sharpness. I switched to Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 and they are nothing short of amazing from a road feel, haven't looked back since. It is hard to tell the difference between them and my dedicated summer rubber. The only draw back is you loose quite a bit in snow performance compared to the DWS tires. But that was a trade off I was very eager to make. Having the A/S 3 on all winter allows me to really still have fun with my vehicle, not neuter it's handling, and most importantly I'm not counting down the days till my summer rubber goes back on. This is for my 335i RWD.

My wife runs Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position RFT Ultra High Performance All-Season on her 35i X3 as a replacement for the GY LS2 tires and they are pretty respectable. Not as good in the snow as the DWS tires but they are more responsive when handling on dry pavement. Still feel pretty crisp.

I got the DWS because it provides good buffer when winter season arrives. Depending on how long I have the car for, I might try out the Michelin. It will take long before I get new tires since I got 2 sets lol.

Tested these on my RWD Cadillac STS for 2yr in NYC , took off the Goodyear LS2 and swapped for DWS and amazing! So far was able to test it in the pouring rain we had last weekend as well as major puddles where the RFT would just not feel stable or confident. DWS > Goodyear LS2 for sure.

I was thinking of sticking with RFT and getting the RE960AS I had in my 3 series but it drove on rails so said no and the rating in TR are horrible (they don't seem to lie). Last option was the Michelin Primacy MXM4 ZP (comes in RFT and non-RFT flavor) but after finding an amazing deal on the DWS i couldn't say no to something I had proven already.

Like n55x3 prefers the A/S 3 as I know others that do due to its top notch handling performance, i am not willing to give up my snow performance just yet but i think since we have X3 xDrive it might be able to do just fine in the snow. Let's see how it plays, as my friend has A/S 3 but already had to replace them during the first year due to bubbling and he loves it but says tread wear is pretty high as well.

Nothing beats dedicated seasons, but with the crazy weather we have in North East (today cold, tomorrow mild with rain, next day snow, following 50 with sun) and some of us not having the time, money or garage to deal with dedicated we have to be glad Continental has brought the DWS for the last 4yrs and saved a lot of our lives.

Agree- I run winters, but I will say, DWS come pretty close...

I do think the Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS tires would be a little more responsive than the DWS but again they give up a little in the snow performance category in my experience. Plus the RE960AS are RFT so if that's a concern then it's one of the better choices in my mind (actually the only 'ultra high performance' all season that is available in RFT I believe).

Last winter we had what I would consider an 'epic' winter here in Ohio. Snow on the ground for weeks at a time, side streets unplowed and just compacted in many cases. On the really bad days I skipped driving my RWD 335i and drove the X3 with RE960AS and they were pretty good. Never once was I worried about getting stuck or sliding off the road, even in deeper snow. If we had DWS on there during those days I'm sure I would have felt even more comfortable than with the RE960AS. Furthermore, if my crystal ball was working and told me the next 3-4 winters would be the same or worse no doubt I'd have gone with DWS. Since I consider our last winter an anomaly I went with a more performance oriented tire.

I really don't think you can go wrong with either one at the end of the day. All the tires mentioned in this thread are highly rated on tirerack.

I was looking at the DWS but decided to go with dedicated winter set for optimal performance. Just replaced the ls2's with Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3's (non-run flat) and the difference is amazing right of the bat, braking, accelerating and steering feel much more direct and connected. Wet cornering grip much better than gy's, haven't had snow to test that but I highly highly doubt they will be worse than the gy's

Thanks ROBNYC and Csurf. We're in the same area with the same crap to drive in.

I go to VT in the winter and I'll tell you, the Eagle LS tires just ain't that great in the snow. I never thought I'd consider 'dedicated' winter tires, but never say never.

I'm often in VT- perhaps we should have an F25 meet and you could try out the snows.

Nice! My true test is going over the roxbury gap on the way to Sugarbush. Scary hill in the winter.

Funny story- called my dealer for the hell of it and asked them to order me the DWS. They said they can't because it's not a BMW approved tire (i.e. run flat)

Right, I was just curious. Ended up picking them up on tire rack $809 to my door, $200 to mount and balance them. I am pleased

Agreed my 13k Cheapyear LS-2 only have 6/32 left and a few weeks ago on a extremely hard down pour rain in the highway they were scary not the left lane, had to drive 10 under speed limit in the middle lane.
Now last week after having my DWS driving in different highways with rain coming down not as hard but very constant and since it was raining prior hours there was no dry areas. I was able to drive 60-75 in all lanes even passing through puddles my X3 w/ DWS felt like there was no rain.

Never used the slime kit for flats before... what's the limitation with these kits? Are they only good for punctures or something similar? Driving on NYC roads, I'm more concern about huge pot holes cutting up the side walls.

Bumping this as I have had the Sottozero's Serie II on our X3. They were solid and I ran them year round. I believe running them year round in Denver I would have ended up at about 15,000-20,000 miles out of them before replacement.

Overall, I'd say they weren't much better than the DWS' I've used in the past. That said, I just ordered DWS' this time.

I have the LS2s, 19s ROF. They are passable, about adequate. I will definitely upgrade when they wear out.
