May buy an X3...what do you think?

I am thinking of buying an X3 to replace my wife's 1999 Passat. She doesn't want an SUV/SAV but I just bought an 2007 328i to replace my 2000 328i and if we buy an X3 she will drive the 328i. It is ok because I also have a 2006 M roadster, so I have a fun car.

So, the struggle I am having is that having just bought the 328i and then looking at the X3 it seems like a step backward to all of the old technology. The 2007 328i is loaded with dual zone air conditioning with vents to the back seats, new stalk controls for wipers, turn signals, etc. The new ignition system with the start/stop button, etc. The X3 gets redesigned for 2010 but that is two model years away. Just wondering if anyone knows when the 2008 model year should be hitting dealers and if there is a chance that it will have updated to the 328i technology?

Got an X3 3.0 as a loaner car before, and to tell you the truth, it wasn't half bad at all. It drove very much like a 328i. In fact, my wife LOVED it (I let her take it for a spin around the block ) ...she thought it was "so cute" and it made her feel younger (not that she's an old lady or anything ). I say get it; she'll probably love it!

if you aren't in a hurry, the X3 has been around since 2003, meaning a whole new one will show up in the next year or two

the revisions they made last year did make it much nicer looking, and I do think it's a nice ride

BUy it. I think its the best BMW for the money. I has to be the best small SUV, with one of the best 6-cylinder engines in the business. It also has a lot of room in the cabin. You wont regret it, my girl friend definitely hasn't.

OK. I found 2007 with Sport Pkg, Premium Pkg, heated seats, auto, Xenon, and premium hi-fi. I am going on Friday to test drive. I have read a lot about the X3 in the last couple of days, sounds like a car I could live with for odds and end errands to the store and the like.

I might be purchasing one for my girlfriend soon. Only thing is it might be a little to big for the city. Since she will be going to college in Boston, I would rather not have a bunch of dings happen.

Granted it will occur even with a car but I feel an SUV will up the amount. So I am still debating like you.

Take a look at the RDX, I dont think you can get an X3 without a step anymore so why not look at another car?

The RDX doesn't have a 6 in it, only a 4. And it has a very short wheel base and big overhangs.

The X3 you can get with either Manual or Steptronic.

this is true, but the bastys at BMW now don't charge extra for the Auto

meaning, if you get a manual, you paid the extra money for the Auto anyways

I think they should always give you a choice of your preferred gear box without any extra charges, good practice.

Purchase Update

Ok, I drove the X3

Sorry, I did not like it. It rides too high, going over bumps you can feel it is top heavy and rocks like a ship (I have very fine tuned equilibrium). It did have a nice exhaust note, but that was one of the few things I liked about it.

Instead I bought a 328XiT Sport Wagon. It has Premium Pkg, Sport Pkg, Navigation, Sat. Radio, and Cold Weather Package. Alpine White/Terra Leather.

The dealer gave me a great deal on it. Apparently these don't sell that well. I can not for the life of me understand why not. When you compare this car to the X3 you get so much much more for much less money. 5K off of list.

x3 vs. 328xiT

my fiance and i just got an x3 and i think the main reason for the decision for the particular model would be fuel conservation (23mpg), ride height of the SAV vs sedan, and extra room, i've never been a fan of the smaller suv's but if anything i think the x3 in particular is more like a crossover than anything else, handles like a heavy sedan with the ground clearance and stability of all wheel drive traction control, maybe it is labled by some as a sorority chick car, better than a soccer mom station wagon, not that i don't drool over the 535xiT at the dealership every time i'm there

I will be getting one next year for my wife. I am choosing it for a few reason like because I already have an e90 and my wife wants something different. We dont mind the harsh ride on the X3 (is no harder than my 330i sport) because the handling is very good. She also likes the idea of a small suv as compared to a station wagon. I like either one. Also when I get a special lease (charter for sellin a certain amount of BLWs in one year) the monthly payment will be much better on an X3 so it will save me almost $100/month. All of this adds up to why I would take an X3. The lease and resale are TERRIBLE for the wagon. The 328xi wagon drives like a dream and I like the I-Drive better than the controller and NAV in the X3. That is my biggest complaint with the X3. The nav is ok but not as good as in the wagon.
