Windshield stone chips filler?
I bought my 2014 X3 xDrive35i a few weeks ago and I have a few stone chips in my windshield that worry me come winter time, as the last car I had did also have some chips and water got in one of them and expanded thus cracking my windshield.
Is there a solution to get those stone chips filled? |

I've found that the kits they sell at auto parts stores work fairly well, although I think they can only be used on one chip per kit?
If you have auto glass coverage, your insurance company might cover the fix at Safelite or somewhere like that because it protects them from a larger future claim. |

I would agree with Terra about checking with a firm which specializes in windshield repair. Most of the reputable firms provide a warranty which can be helpful if trading in or selling, and may be covered under your insurance. If you aren't sure, you can always check with your Service Dept for their recommendations to someone locally in your area.

Locally the companies that do them only charge $50-$70 to have it done professionally and it is guaranteed for life, that's what I do for the odd big chip before it expands

A lot of insurance companies offer free windshield chips/cracks repair. Call yours and see about it.
I know Geico gives free repairs for anythings smaller than a dollar bill. |

I have got two chips already on mine, only had two in the last 10 years or so on other cars.
Also me and my wife have both noticed that the windscreen attracts flies and dirt like no other car we have owned, we get through so much washer fluid as the screen seems to suck all the crap in. Must be the aerodynamics? |

Well, the glass is certainly soft on this car. I have one rock chip on the windshield, fine scratches on one window, and pitting on another where it looks like somebody sneezed acid onto it.

Definitely check with your insurance. It's pretty common for them to cover windshield repairs free of charge. They'll just send Safelite out to your home or office. It's in their best interest to do this service for free as a crack usually expands over time and a complete windshield replacement would be much more expensive.
I'm a die hard do it yourself guy but after seeing the repair process I just don't think I could get to that level of finish using a DIY kit. Plus with it being free it's just easier to let the pros take care of it. We have already had one crack filled on the wife's X3. No issues thus far. Was a huge crack/chip as well. |

I would imagine a smart insurance company would only do it if you have a very low deductable. I have a $1,000 deductable so I am afraid they wouldn't do it as the cost of a new one would be less than that

I had a rock chip within a month on my new 2015 X3. Canadian (BC) insurance won't cover repair but only replace Windshield with deductibles. Local glass repair is around $50 each repair but they use pretty much the same solution as the following...
I had my other car (RX8) repaired by one of the "repair professional" and the result wasn't any better than DIY using the first solution I am recommending. Single use. $10-15 very effective as it does vacuum and pressure (2 stages) http://www.permatex.com/products-2/p...air-kit-detail Multiple uses. $10-15 Not very effective as it does only pressure (single stage) but you can use multiple times. http://3mauto.com/3m-windshield-repair-kit-08580.html Check out Walmart in State and you should find similar solution for $10~ by RainX but I never tried it so I can't recommended it. https://www.rainx.com/product/windsh...ld-repair-kit/ Find something with Pedestal like this that can create a "sealed" application which will yield better result. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Windscreen-Wi...52eadc&vxp=mtr It does take a day or 2 after to see the resin totally flow through all the cracks. The rock chip is now merely a tiny little dot on my windshield after repair which is pretty impressive. Last edited by ecsw; 06-25-2015 at 02:00 PM.. |

The X3 is a stone magnet. I had a MAJOR stone within one hour of having it, on a road with nobody else. That lead to a new windscreen in fact.
I cleaned the car last week end, and yes, after 2 years and around 35k miles, it's not terribly pretty :/ The (new) windscreen also has a few poke marks, but the most visible ones are on the bonnet.
