Country quotas are for real, the other part was a joke.

Each month certain amount of prudction slots of X3s are reserved for Nordic countries.

It's got to be production quotas based on the plant's capacity and sales demand. It's certainly not the overseas aspect of it, or the shipping. I got my German-built Z4 delivered here in the US exactly 6 weeks after ordering.

In the US each dealer gets a bunch of X3 slots per month - i was told by my CA the only predefined factor in the slot is engine model 28i vs 35i. anything else could be changed up until production. (haven't confirmed if thats true, but i was told i could have gotten a 28i 1-2 weeks sooner than my 35i, however they were glad to sell me their next 35i slot as well)

is this system true for dealerships outside the US or is build slots allocated by country and thats it?

In Nordics all countries are within same quota. And that quota is distributed to retailers in this area.

But long delivery times? Might it be that the diesel 2.0 is so popular they can't produce enough engines to all cars? This could explain quick delivery times in US as they are never 2.0 diesels.

And that same engine is in so many other BMW as well. The demand must be quite huge. Do they have engine manufacturing at Spartanburg or are the engines shipped from Europe?
