Aftermarket Rear Seat Entertainment (DVD / DTV)
Hi guys,
I have been looking into aftermarket rear seat entertainment systems for the new X3. BMW dont offer one as yet. I want headrest monitors with DVD and digital TV. Anyone done any research on these or had a great system installed? The best in Oz I have found so far is www.mr-dvd.com.au.

I'd recommend going with iPads: http://store.apple.com/us/product/H6...co=MTg3MjY3ODI

+1 On the iPads ... I had one on the M3 and my son loves it.

Company like Eurologics has RSE system with custom bracket, which I think looks good.
(installed on Porsche Panamera, taken from: http://www.aidesign.com/blog-and-new...--rse--systems) I don't know if they can receive television signals though. I actually like the iPad solution too, you can do more than just watching movies on iPad. The downside is you have to rip your dvds and transfer it to your iPad beforehand. |

Does X3 have active head restraints? If, yes, then I wonder if the "custom" solution will get in the way of head rest movement in case of a bump/crash.

You'll have to rip it to a video file like an mp4 (Google dvd to mp4) and then convert it so that it's compatible with your iPad using something like RZ Video Converter. Once that's done just drag it into iTunes.

While browsing realoem site, I found out BMW has OEM RSE for X3, but it is mounted on the center console instead:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...38&hg=65&fg=95 From the illustration on that site, I'm guessing it replaces the center compartment lid. Further search on the bmw.com site: http://accessories.bmw.com/internet_...&absoluteNav=1 They also have "tablet dvd" mounted on heardrest support, but IMO doesn't look that good. http://accessories.bmw.com/internet_...&absoluteNav=1 |

Caution, read the fine print on the RealOEM site! It may work for powertech83 and Dr Stig 2, but not for those in the US, Canada, and South Korea.
"Use in USA, Canada and Korea is prohibited!" "Delivery status: Country code 2. The dealer may revise the country code as required, for instructions please refer to the Aftersales Assistance Portal (ASAP). Region code 2 is intended for the following regions: Europe, Japan, Middle East, Egypt, South Africa, Greenland " It sounds like it is configured to work with only All-Region or Region 2 DVDs, changeable by the dealer. The exclusion of US, Canada, and South Korea may mean that US and Canadian dealers cannot make the change for you. Ask before you buy. |

Weird though - we have a DVD in the dash which should play in the rear display - and it can play code 4 (Australia / pacific) DVDs. I plan to use this as ammunition to take to the dealer - and let him sort it out - the car still hasn't hit production - let alone shipping and delivery in Oz. Heaps of time to let them get their act together. I only have the one concern - putting the screen where kids can kick it is a bad design, and (better make that two concerns) making the kids look down while driving is a recipe for car sickness. THe high displays are a natural cure for motion sickness in little kids. We have two ipads now - one each - so they kids could have that solution as well - except we would need to remove them from the car to stop them being stolen. I think they make a much more attractive target to thieves than built in monitors. They are so easily transported and re-sold...
