Ordered 2014 with M Sport - Should I add DHP for 1300?
Hello all, can't wait to join you guys with my 2014 X3.
Just signed the order yesterday with the following: Alpine White w/ fineline Driver Assistance Pkg with top view cam Premium Pkg Navigation - skipped Techno pkg to save 1k (not of a fan of the HUD) Heated front seats M Sport Package w/ standard suspension option. Should I add the DHP for $1300 as I still have time to adjust my order as per my CA. I read that VERY informative thread on DHP (confusing but it make sense) Here's my dilemma: I'm a NYer with a baby on the way in the Long Island area. I won't be driving spirited runs on sport/sport + modes as it is just impossible with that 495 traffic. I plan to trade-in/sell this SAV within 4 years. Get the DHP for resell value? I'm coming off a 2007 530i with sport suspension. I kind of wanted to save that 1300 for tire/wheel insurance. thx all |

Yes
Yes. See this from the latest convert:
http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=832981 DHP is a complete bargain relative to the usefulness and flexibility it provides. Of all the features I enjoy about my X3, this is one of the top ones. For $1300, you really can't go wrong. |

The DHP is one option that didn't hurt when I checked the order box.

The added resale value after 4 years for the $1300 spent would be hard to gauge - and if as you describe your usage its not going to be a big issue then maybe you won't miss it.
We don't have it on ours and its a case of what you don't have you don't know. DHP will be something we will try out before we get our next one. Hope that helps a bit!

I guess the resale value will be minimal on DHP.
From what I understand the big resale hitters in the UK for Premium cars are listed here- http://www.which.co.uk/cars/choosing...resale-values/ The value of DHP will probably be lost on most 2nd hand buyers- it's hidden in the car and not visible. If you get DHP, get it for your own use, not for any expected value come resale time. |

DHP makes it a totally different ride. I had a 2012 X3 without and ordered a 2014 with. It honestly is a must have! ADD IT!

Get it. DHP is what makes the X3 The Ultimate Driving Machine.

I think its worth the cost, but I've not driven a non DHP model back to back to note how the standard suspension compares.
Unless there are higher priority options and the budget is tight.

In my view the most important attribute of the DHP is that it provides a better ride than the stock suspension over less than pristine roads. I have a 2011 35i and this point was made clear when my car was in for some work and I was given a new X3 28i with stock suspension as a loaner. The DHP is more compliant and takes the harshness out of small cracks, breaks, and imperfections in the pavement, and make potholes (which you can't avoid ) a little less jarring. The cost is a little added float but since the suspension is dynamic when pushed hard in normal will handle at least as well as the stock suspension. And of course, there is still sport mode.
Although I bought the DHP for the sport mode I spend 90+% of the time in normal, and would buy it again for the better ride alone. This all depends on the condition of the roads you drive. Lest anyone think I'm a closet Toyota owner ( ) my other car, which I love, is an E46M3, about as a hard riding, least compliant car BMW has sold in the US. |

Now that I have had both, I can tell you that DHP is a no brainer. If you can't afford to spend what I would consider the nominal $1300 more, you shouldn't be buying a BMW. DHP Really makes the X3 a solid performance machine and it drives much, much better. My Old X3 without the DHP drove more like my friends Volkswagen Tiguan - whereas the X3 with DHP drives actually better than the X5, it's very very solid. Everyone on BP recommends DHP because it is really great, it really changes the car.

I've been following this post with interest - assuming that what you guys on the western side of pond call DHP, we call VDC here - the variable dampers.
I have never driven a car with variable dampers, but I have a 2011 530d M Sport at the moment, and it has the standard M Sport suspension. I live out in the country and there are lots of uneven road surfaces and potholes. The 530 crashes into them and shakes you to pieces. I have no idea whether it would be a fair comparison to an X3 on M Sport suspension, but the ability to have a soft ride over these road surfaces really appealed to me.

Looking back at this thread-
The op says he's going to keep the car for 4 years. So even with no resale for DHP that equates to $325 per year. Not much in the grand scheme of things. My X3 is on 2 year finance, with 18 months left. If I get a BMW again I will insist on comparing a car with and without this option. Driving back from Birmingham to Maidenhead today- the M40 is road surface is all over the place. I noticed it even more when coming back from holiday in France. The roads there a super smooth, and super expensive (tolls). I like a connected drive, but also the option to waft over poor road surfaces. MAYBE DHP goes someway towards that goal?? |

There is a way to check if you have DHP with the VIn number, just plug it in one of those web sites that shows you the options.
I have the DHP on my 35i X3 and it's fantastic, I think it really transforms the car and is necessary for sporty driving. |

The Dynamic Handling Package certainly includes dynamic dampers (which are great), but it also includes variable sport steering and performance control. Modern electric steering can feel very indirect, but variable sport steering helps by providing progressively more direct steering as the steering wheel is turned further. That makes the steering forgiving when you are driving in a straight line, but more engaging when you are taking a curve. Performance control helps, too, by enhancing traction on curves. Without performance control, the X3 takes corners with a steady state torque split of 40/60 front/rear; with performance control the rear wheel bias is pushed to 20/80. So DHP is not only about the adaptive suspension.
