3.0d or 3.5d

My F11 touring will be coming up for a change in Sept. Have been looking at X3 and dealer says delivery time now down to 12 weeks in UK.

Is there much difference in performance in the real world between the 2 big diesels? What sort of mpg are people getting from the 3.5d? Any information helpful as difficult to get demos in both cars for a comparison.

Maybe with delivery times coming right down dealers are prepared to offer some discount?? Has anybody been able to get £2500 off list?

Thanks

If you search posts by clivem2 you'll find a good comparison writeup. A few members including myself have achieved 8% discount on high spec 30d/35d orders.

I think you will be lucky to get much of a discount at the moment. My order went in this week. I checked with ' What Car' target price service who track these things with dealers. There is such a high demand for the X3 so the best you are going to get is around £350/ 5 years service inclusive.
I was looking at an X6 also. Here about £2,400 worth of accessories plus 7% was on offer just for the asking.
You might be better off with car brokers, but make sure you are the first owner on the reguistration docs if that is important to you.
Hope that helps

Shop around... There are definitely deals to be had (5% should be achievable, but some people are getting up to 8% - we got about 8%, but that was across a joint X3/528i order...). Bigger dealers probably in the midlands/North are more likely to discount a d you will have to push and probably play them off against each other...)

Definately shop around but remember most people will now want MY13 version and I guess this makes a difference? If you can do better good luck to you but did anyone get a discount for this build yet?
Cheers

Yes, mine will be a MY13 (delivery due June hopefully). We ordered before any price increases took effect (ordered Feb) and will not be subject to any increases. Has a new price list been published (since Jan?)?

If you are ordering in the UK now, there is no option for a new (made to order) MY12 is there? We ordered Feb and there was no option: since a build could not be scheduled before the MY13 was introduced...

So 8% across 2 cars, maybe that was against the other car? Based on the experience of the X6 it is possible.

My car also will be a MY2013 ordered beginning of March.
As QT said, the order was at the old price. Looking at the car configurator, I can see my spec having increased by about £50.

I was quite happy with the discount given (around 6%) along with the free servicing deal

Possible, but fairly unlikely that the dealer would give 16% on a 5 Series.... (and the X3 was more expensive than the 5 Series). Probably a 10/11% and 5/6% split.... I am pretty sure that we could have bargained quite a lot harder (two cars), but we were in a rush....

Think that the OP really should shop around (between dealers and maybe even between brands...): you can get a lot better than the Whatcar target price...

You should really try and drive both models back-to-back. Driving the 30d in isolation you'd probably find the engine very good but given the 35d has two turbos, one small and one large. There is probably less trubo lag and a more spontaneous response than the single turbo 30d.

After some time the 30d feels like a base motor ...

Go for 35d!

I have the 30d as when I ordered the 35d wasn't yet available.

The 30 is plenty quick enough and, in the UK, is a bit cheaper in tax terms as a company car. The stats speak for themselves the 35 is quicker but I am not sure that, other than a straight line drag race, it is usable.

There is some lag on the 30d but it is not a big issue in normal driving or overtaking. I don't notice it as the auto box does a good job of getting the engine speeds right.

In the end either engine is good and if you can afford it get the 35d but you won't be disappointed in the 30d.

The narrow power band and lag from the 30d can sometimes be apparent. A lot depends on the roads in question, brisk driving on A or B roads will be a little more fun the the 35d in that the engine is more responsive and predictable. The absolute difference is performance is not of much consequence, it's the manner of its delivery which is better with the 35d. The 35d in "normal" is somewhat like the 30d in "sport".

I find it easier to manage turbo lag with a manual gearbox so sometimes it catches me out in the 30d, though this is as much to do with having the car in normal mode too. It is less of an issue with the 35d.

Thanks everyone really useful. What is the latest on mpg? I hear Eco Pro standard from all builds after 9 April wonder if that might nudge the emissions down even further? In the UK it's a factor to consider

Judging by a 1 series drove recently with the new eco mode, you wouldn't actually want to drive in that mode.....

My 30d does high 20's on short (cold engine) trips. 32 to 35 locally when warm. 37 on the motorway at 80 ish. It has done 47mpg Cheshire to Cambridge but that was at 60mph. Any speed reduction on the motorway correlates strongly with improved mpg.
