So let's revisit this, shall we? I'm still experiencing this over washboarded roads, and I've been doing some research and this seems to plague many BMW owners since 2001. Related to this clunk, but previously not mentioned, is a steering click when the car is off. Jiggling the steering wheel, I hear "clickickick," as I move it back and forth. I'm putting an end to these rattles and clunks I'm experiencing once and for all. I just wanted a nice car, and this is the thanks I get. Twice. I'm paying a manufacturer to build me a car, and twice now quality control has failed me. I'm unhappy about all of this nonsense.

I care because it replicates the same sound that occurs over sudden pavement changes. And to hear it for the first time with the car off and with no prior knowledge of the problem would definitely lead me to believe that something is dangerously loose in my steering or suspension.

Could it be "tyre pressure related"?.
Mine thankfully is fine.

Yeah it's not normal. If you search around on google you'll find BMW models since 1992 with this issue. Apparently, the same noise/problem can occur from a variety of loose or missing parts, which is why my dealership is afraid to do anything to this one.

Yeah Mine is in the BMW dealership, where they found that the steering column/rack had a problem and want to replace it. They say its going to take 5 days.
The issue I had in my 2011 x35i was at slow speeds while making tight turns the steering would make a thud kind of sound, and I could feel the jerk in the steering wheel. Also, my steering gets crazy and turns violently literally when it hits a road pothole or some other uneveness on the road. I used to think this was usual for a BMW, but until I drove the loaner X3 (28i)which was just fine on such bumps. Don't know if the the new steering column would fix this steering-turning itself issue or not. |

So did everyone's steering rack replacement fix this? Because my dealership is hesitating to touch this car the second time around, as the first X3 with the same problem saw no remedy. I can't seem to figure out what it is. Please help. I'm at wit's end here.
