BMW Tire Insurance

Hello all!

Is the tire insurance for $1895 worth it? It is a 5 year warranty that replaces the tire and rims in the event of it ever getting flat/cracked. My BMW tires are 19 inch with all season performance tires.

Any comments or suggestions if I should purchase that? Thanks!!

It is insurance, with a high markup (which is why they push it so hard at the finance desk). On any particular car or policy period you may get a net benefit, but long term the house will always win. Overall, it's best to keep the insurance for things that will really crimp your style (or worse) if you have a loss, and pay the freight yourself on the small stuff.

They usually limit you to replacing the tires with whatever OEM tires the dealer carries so you don't get the chance to replace them with something you might prefer (many prefer to switch to non-RFT tires) and most replacement tires can be had with quite usable roadhazard policies that may be somewhat less generous, are much cheaper.

The best use of the dealer policy is probably for those who lease and can roll the cost into the monthly payment, and have an interest in maintaining OEM tires on the car.

Depends where you live. In metropolitan areas with potholes the new wheels are soft and often crack.Low profile tires also will develope bubbles if hit hard in potholes. I have a Jag that has had 7 rims replaced and 5 tires in 2.5 years.

How many tires or rims have you repair or replace in the last 5 years?

I personally think tire insurance from dealers are a waste of money.

I have the OEM 18" 400M with OE RFT tires on my 335i RWD M Sport and haven't had any issues with potholes so far. I've driven 46,000 miles on them since July 2014 between MD and NY with no issues. When I read people needing to replace multiple sets of wheels/tires, it's usually because they have a 19" or 20" wheel with extremely low profile tires.

On the X3, if you use non-RFT 18" tires, you'll be fine. If you experience a blown tire from a pothole with that setup, I'd put the car on the alignment rack and see if you've bent or damaged parts of the suspension.

he stated he has 19" wheels which means he should get insurance lol.

even if you get a nail in it, it gets replaced.

lets say u damage a rim and need new rim+tire, the cost may be between 800-1000 not including labor.

Why would you pay almost ~$2000 for something that a $13 can of flexseal could fix?

Not recommended by who? The tire company or the dealership, or is it recommended not to be fix by someone else that will profit from you buying a new tire.

This.

I repaired my OE RFTs from a nail puncture. It can be repaired the same way a regular tire would. It would just no longer be an "RFT" tire.

I will say that an RFT is much harder to repair (as in physical effort required to clean up the hole the nail used to occupy).

Tirerack has selection of tires that cant be fix.

besides its a peace of mind when the roads are horrible.

i actually avoided RFT, have regular tires in which If i do get a flat I am still cover by the insurance.

i had 1 rim/tire replaced after having it for 6 months under wheel insurances.

it all depends where you live

I'm sorry - where on earth have you got this from? As you say, a punctured runflat can be repaired in the exact same way as a conventional tyre/tire. The very same rules apply - ie as long as the puncture is in the tread of the tyre and is more than 5-10mm (this amount does vary between shops) from the edge of the tread it can be repaired. And after it has been repaired it is still a runflat tyre. The repair in the tread of the tyre has absolutely nothing to do with the reinforced sidewall of the tyre which makes a runflat tyre able to be driven on while flat. The only time you cannot (or rather should not) repair and reuse a punctured runflat tyre is when it has been driven dead flat for some distance (and again this distance varies from who you talk to and varies from 5-20km/3-12 miles). A puncture in the tread of a runflat tyre is no more difficult to repair than in a conventional tyre.

Everything I have said is consistent with what you have just said.

I'm just saying that the physical effort exerted to repair a nail punctured in the tread "seemed" like it was a lot more effort than repairing a standard tire. I was specifically referring to the part where you ream the hole and then file it before plugging.
