VANOS Bolts Recall

I haven't seen a post about it here yet, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/202...=bimmerist.com

Safety Recall
23V-707
VANOS
Model Year 2010-2013
BMW 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series
BMW X1, X3, X5, Z4
(Models with inline 6-cylinder engine)
Issue Date: 10/23/2023

The solution says replace the four bolts... I hope it's a bit more than that considering all that goes into the repair and replace. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed December 12, 2023. Second letters will be mailed once the remedy is available.

I just received my recall notice today.
190,000 trouble free miles.

No fix as of yet.

When the fix is available, I’m afraid if I get this done then 100 miles later then boom, sorry can’t help ya

Then what about my non leaking valve cover gasket that will start leaking when they warp the valve cover when they replace just the gasket….

This sounds like a redo of a recall from 2014 https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/201...4V176-3214.pdf

Just type in your VIN. Before only "a certain number cars were affected" and then there was a ten year warranty, and now they are recalling the rest that weren't initially recalled.

I am curious as to why it's the N52 but only from 2010 onward.

I would guess it is probably a bad batch of parts that they eventually traced to a certain period of time where they did not catch all of the affected ones initially.
similar with Audi 3.0 camshafts in 2002 that had defective hardening causing cam lobes to wear or saab head bolts that stretched too much causing head gasket leaks

I didn't get the second notification. I reached out to BMW a few weeks ago and they had a customer service rep call me. They just reiterated that they can't do anything until the next notification comes out. Basically BMW needs to make sure dealers have all the parts they need to get the job done, and when that happens they can send out the second notice.

From my limited search, these are "unobtainium" for the time being. There are a few sites which list them for sale but once an order is placed they will email immediately stating that they are back-ordered/out of stock. This was the case with the three vendors I tried. The BMW parts desk has them, but they can't be released with out a warranty claim at the moment. When I went to the parts desk the rep showed me his screen with "do not sell" annotated next to the PN.
It's a fairly uncommon thread size and pitch which makes sourcing a fit-form-function replacement nearly impossible. But if you have better luck, definitely post back.

I'd like to see it as well!

I had the recall on my 135i quite a while back, I had no issues but they did say a few bolts were indeed loose.

I think it should be, that dealer just sounds like they're on top of their stuff.
