It went back with 799 miles on the clock. We remain positive, but are gutted about having to let the X3 go. It was very good.

They were good to be fair, we go a long way back with them and they were very helpful.
We have some plans in place and The otherhalf has already got some irons in th fire, so hopefully we can get settled and maybe get another. I hope the waiting times have reduced a bit by then though!

Well, I've finally joined the ranks - after jumping back and forth between Msport and SE and 35d and 30d I have today ordered:

X3 xDrive30d SE

Mineral Silver
Oyster Nevada Leather
Fineline Wave Wood
18" V-spoke style 307 Wheels

Media package – Professional Multimedia
Visibility Package
Electric Seat Adjustment with Lumbar Support

Internet
Mobile Application Preparation
Telephone USB Audio Interface
Loudspeaker system - BMW Business
Bootlid Operation, Powered
Instrument Panel Embellishers, black
Seat Heating, Front
Reversing Assist Camera with Top View
Xline Package
Servotronic Power Steering
Performance Control
Sport Seats, front
Sport Steering Wheel

Should look the same as this:

Not sure exactly when it'll turn up but current driving a year old Audi Q5 so no real urgency.

Welcome dnw

Why the change from the q5? Initial comparison from your test drive?

On a side note I am sad to report I no longer have my X3. Sadly my other half lost her job in the week and I sold the car back to the dealer. Turned into the most expensive two week car hire ever....
Sorry to hear, hope it all works out for you

Thanks boys, you've made me feel at home already

To answer the questions:

Why the change from the Q5. Well, I love the Q5. I think it looks better overall and the build quality is definitely superior. However, having owned it for a year there are two things that I can't get on with: 1) The suspension kills me. Its S-line with 20" wheels and I curse it over the potholes every time I drive to the station and back. 2) The 4-pot, even in 170hp form, is underpowered for a car of the size. No offense meant (and each to his own) but the X3 20d is the same. Never struggles, but never really goooooooooes. I am a bit of boy racer at heart and I can't deal with Golfs or Fiesta Z-techs staying in my mirrors when I join a motorway. I pondered changing for another Q5 in 3.0tdi form but that seems a bit boring, plus I've always loved BMWs for the fun factor (I have owned a couple in the past and current have 118d as a second car) and the straight six diesel, even in vanilla 30d, is an absolute gem. Sport mode, foot down and you think you're in a sports car. Seriously, not had as much fun in a long time as I had a fortnight ago in a 30d for the day.

In summary vs Q5:

Q5: Better build quality (unquestionable- just look at your storage compartment made of cardboard under the steering wheel and that terrible rattly plastic boot cover in the back of the X3, you would never find this in an Audi), better looks (totally subjective!)

X3: Far better engines and tech, much more fun, much better choice of interior colours (Audi Sline is black, black or black).

On the spec: contemplated a 35d for a long time but that you just have to have in MSport (no one will want a used one in SE) and, to be honest, I just dont like the Msport. The wheel choice is not that great and it looks a bit too chaved-up for me. Totally subjective I admit!. I prefer the Mineral Silver which is not available in MSport and I dont want the sport suspension nor do I want to pay nearly a grand on top for the toy suspension. SE suspension with Performance control and Servotronic coupled with the 30d will really be a wolf in sheeps clothing. I would have loved the 19" wheels but the premium is silly if you don't add the Dynamic Pack (which would add the sport suspension that I dont want).

I'm really happy with my choice and hope that our friends over in South Carolina get around to putting it together (carefully) soon!

Mileage - MPG at 2000miles on the clock.

Drove to Scotland yesterday, 250 miles at 65mph - got 47mpg. Drove back today at 70mph and got 43mpg.

I did not know until today, that the BMW quoted "extra-urban" figure of 53.3mpg was actually at a speed of 39mph.. see this link..

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/common/m...h_spec_faq.jsp

So my figures of mid - high 40's at the speed limit on the motorway are acceptable

It's an average speed of 39mph and I think it covers a few different speeds for a set length of time in cycle up to a maximum of about 70mph - but don't quote me on that as I can't remember where I heard/read it.

And I'm pretty sure they're on a rolling road to remove other variables ... so no wind resistance.

Hi, Newbie here...

Ordered a M Sport 2.0d back in July and was told an estimated delivery date of April. Had a panicked call from the dealer last week to say that extra units were allocated to the UK so If I wanted mine bringing forward I could have it end of December!

Its all spec'd up now and being built 2nd week of November

Christmas Bonus!

Also true but they apply a drag coefficient to simulate wind resistance.

I would prefer it if they just gave you more useful (IMO) figures like

mpg at 40mph over 20 miles (including some hills)
mpg at 50mph over 20 miles (including some hills)
mpg at 60mph over 20 miles (including some hills)
mpg at 70mph over 20 miles (including some hills)
mpg at 80mph over 20 miles (including some hills)

and then the other driving cycle figures on top of these

Give them a call... he only knew about it when someone went in to change spec and their date had been bought forward.
