Performance Control basically allows you to throw it around corners a bit quicker...

It also increases the speed limitation. E.g. 130mph for a stock X3 30d, 137mph for X3 30d M Sport (M Sport includes Performance Control in the UK)

Not that I've tested this of course

It seems Performance Control is a brake based torque vectoring system between left and right rear wheels. Does it actually alter the front/rear axle torque split?

If not, then an actual Limited Slip Diff like Quaife/Torsen would be superior in performance applications. http://www.birdsauto.com/parts/M2533705914

Just to throw my thoughts in the pot.

I read somwhere that the he auto gearbox reduces to a six speed when sport mode is selected

It doesn't use 8th which is a cruising gear.

VDC works well for me, except it's a bit too soft over speed bumps.

Seven, not six. You can manually shift to eighth, but the transmission will not shift to it on its own.
