USB Port in Glove Box

Hi guys,

Does the USB port (not as the data transmission port) provide power to USB devices? I have used it to update my NAV system, but wondering if I can connect my USB Dashcam to it?

I have noticed it provides power, but it is inconsistent?

"but is it consistent" ?
your device circuitry (most) are set to use the USB 5volts or not, and can also
determine if inconsistent and disconnect.
How do you mean inconsistent?
Its the same power produced or used by either the bmw control processor
or its power source. Do you mean is it a filtered source ?

The USB port will provide power continuously whilst the ignition circuit is live, so you can use it to provide power for a dash cam. After the ignition is switched off, it provides power for approximately 15 minutes. After this time the car goes into sleep mode.

If you want a dash cam to operate in parking mode after that time, you will need to find a permanent live feed.

I am not interested in that. What I found to be a problem is that the USB port in the glove box doesn't provide power to my dash cam. When I plugged it in, I saw that it was powered, but when I subsequently turned on the car, I didn't see power go to that USB port.

Not all X3's have a USB port in the glove box. I was talking about the one in the centre console that is powered up when I stated it was.

my 2017 x3 has a little square area, top left in glove box with a punch out that a usb port would fit.
but its not punched out, no usb port.
Thought ? might the power to this glove box port also go off if the door is closed?

Also and i don't know this .. do all dash cams run on 5vt ? probably...
some have internal capability of reducing voltage. Mine doesn't and i had to buy
a voltage reduction unit (choke) with long lead wires, so its pwrd off of
12 vts. and choked to 5vt.....no usb to be had.

x000vj8j9f is the number off the pwr cable bag. it was an option when i bought
the dash cam unit on amazon.......If you don't find suitable usb
