Whatever you decide to get, always have a prepurchase inspection done. N52 engine should be the most reliable as well. My N52 has been flawless with 121,000 miles on it. I have owned it since new.
They're not terrible but imo they are definitely the least attractive option for the X3. Thanks for your input, I really like the smoothness and reliability of the N52 (yet to drive a car with N55)

Ok, but the first one also has the 35i engine (which really, I don't need but not gonna complain about)
Is the sport seat more important than other equipment such as backup camera from a resale pov?
Sport seats: have heated ones in my 2012 28i....no comment on resale value but they are all around a much better seat compared to standard design, superior comfort, support, etc. standard seats have very flat bottom cushion- bought my car used and test drove many with regular seats, the sport seats sealed the decision.

My car pretty much base trim- only heated sport seats, good headlamps and convenience package- no cameras, no sunroof, nothing. Felt seats were THE big deciding factor. But, best to try out both seat types, you may find not as big a deal to you.

Backup camera and sunroof certainly nice, but for me I've had car's w/sunroofs for umpteen years and find I rarely used them (open)...and that was when I lived in California where weather is conducive to open roof driving. Backup camera would be nice, but after 3 years of driving my X3 I find rear visibility is good, haven't backed into anything yet - these cars are not that big, so parking and the like in city situation really never an issue.

Check if the second one has camera too, I think that was standard but I could be wrong. For me the ability to choose sport/comfort via button and the thigh support in sport seat are very important. Regret not having those in my 2012 F25

It does not have a camera, only sensors.
I like the car a lot and I don't doubt that the seats are nice but I will try to see if they can come down in price a bit. Total cost would be almost $18k which is a bit hefty for a 2011 imo

At this mileage the BMW would have 70% of life left while asking 30% of full price. Also there might be some after market camera you can install.

True! I would be OK with 50% of the life left for less than 20% of full price though, lol

Now, I'm not going to go crazy but it allows some more flexibility and I just want to show you a couple of cars that may or may not be available in a week or two but just to show you where my mind is so I can get your thoughts.

2011 xDrive35i
https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/d...4686/overview/
Pros - Correct color combination, xenon, nice wheels, 35i engine, low miles at 59k, has all the equipment we need, it's local
Cons - It's rather expensive for a 2011? Not sure if miles > age but would be nice to get it under $15k. Also at a dealership so the sales tax is 9.5% (used car from private seller would be something like $85 in comparison)

2011 xDrive35i
https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/d...0211/overview/
Pros - Great color combination (wife prefers white but honestly it does not matter), xenon, nice wheels, 35i engine, low miles at 53k, it's local.. (Pretty much the same as above)
Cons - Again, same as the car above. No backup camera though? Honestly not the end of the world but resale value might hurt in the future.. A little pricey. Maybe I can pit these dealerships against eachother.

2011 xDrive28i
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...40502920288121
Pros - Good color combination, xenon, nice wheels, 28i engine, looks super clean for the miles, private seller and somewhat local. This would probably be around $5-6000 cheaper than the cars above.
Cons - 28i engine I guess you could say, but honestly living in downtown Chicago I don't really care about the power, the miles are high at 110k but if I can get it cheap I don't mind a repair here or there.

2011 xDrive28i
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...42220695906929
Pros - OK color combination, xenon, 28i engine, cheap, low miles, well equipped
Cons - A bit of a drive but that's fine, looks OK but has some moisture in the roof? Also the wheels are super ugly, I know they can be replaced but it's added cost and effort.

What are your opinions? Obviously buying a cheaper car is always nicer but I don't want to be left disappointed.
The perfect car would be newer of course but finding it difficult to find anything and I'm fine with travelling.
Input is appreciated!

It is sold, but thanks!

I have actually found a car now, a blue 2011 xDrive28i with 30,000 miles and a warranty. Will probably pick it up next week.

Thanks everybody for the help!

I'm new to the forum but will chime in.

We have bought our 2nd BMW, a 2013 X3 2.8i with the 2.0. Now, I generally would have shied away from this particular model but the engine was replaced less than 1000 miles before we bought it with a brand new 2020 version of the 2.0. I don't have fear of the timing chain/guides/tensioner on this new engine so I jumped in. Less than 90k miles for $11k. Black and well equiped.

I have since done about $1200 worth of maintenance (trans fluid and filter change, transfer case fluid, both diffs, oil, coolant pump, thermostat, fresh coolant, filters and wipers). I'm expecting a solid 50-60k miles without much additional investment.

Might consider looking at one with an engine change if nervous about the 2.0. I will stay that I like the regular 2.8 better, much nicer pull and smoother/quieter. But hey.

I posted this earlier but I think I accidentally deleted the post when I went to edit it.

Anyway, on Saturday I am picking up this beautiful X3 xDrive28i.
It's a late 2011 build, only has 30 000 miles and has a bumper to bumper warranty. Carfax is super clean and it has been maintained regularly. It's a bit over budget but with the warranty, good equipment and the extremely low miles I think it's warranted.
Let me know what you think.

The seller is being really weird and flaky, I wasn't even allowed to come see the car any time this weekend because he had to 'work'. Can't answer basic questions and is just not accommodating at all... I guess the hunt goes on.

I did find a decent 2013 35i now with 98k miles. Its pretty cheap but the CIC display is broken, it doesn't seem to expensive to fix but is it worth the gamble?
Carfax and maintenance looks great..

Even though the seller is being flaky, personally I'd still try to pursue purchasing it due the low mileage and non-turbo engine over something with 98k miles at a lower cost.

I haven't seen them so it's hard to know the value of either based on condition/options, but with nearly 70k more miles you may end up with well more the $6000 in repairs as time goes on? Since BMW state the many of the fluids are lifetime, critical ones(trans/transfer/diffs) may be original, which is not good. 70k is like 6 more years of use unless that was a lot of highway miles.

Ok, fair enough. I'll bring out the facts about both cars.

First car is the blue 2011 xDrive28i, it has just passed 30,000 miles and has a clean carfax with maintenance records with oil changes and more every year. The warranty was unfortunately not transferable. Price is $14,500. It's pretty close to me, just an hour and a half drive.

Second car is a grey 2013 xDrive35i, it's just below 100,000 miles but also has a clean carfax with maintenance records every year/15,000 miles. Battery just replaced.
It looks clean on the pictures but an inspection would be needed of course. There is one problem with it and that is that the CIC display does not work.
Asking price is $8500, but I have a feeling that could be negotiated a little bit. The car is also a solid 8 hour drive from me.

If it were me, in your situation, I'd select the 2011 over the 2013
  • You're getting this as a family vehicle with a newborn so you should select the more reliable one, 30k vs 98k, non-turbo vs turbo.
  • Sport seats are much more comfortable in my opinion.
  • Roof rails, especially if plan to use a carrier for extra space on a trip. Installing rails on the 2013 would be pretty expensive plus a lot of trim and roof liner to be removed/dropped.
  • On the 2013, if the oil was changed every 15k, IMHO, that's way too many miles, though BMW computer not agree
  • 1.5 hs vs 8 hrs away
