Evoque Beats X3 for NA car of year
I can't imagine you would pick this if you had driven both cars. It seems that the Evoque was picked on looks. The X3 is clearly the better car on the road, which is where 99.5% of people who buy an Evoque will drive it exclusively.
I guess the automotive press is no different than the regular press in opting for style over substance. http://www.washingtonpost.com/busine...DlP_story.html |

Off road the Evoque would likely be the better car... the auto journalists have spent a lot of time testing the Evoque through mud, water and off road. I personally think the Evoque is a nicer looking car too. The turbo 4 in the Evoque is a great motor (too bad BMW has not made the N20 globally available in the X3)
... but after recently driving both cars back to back I've decided the X3 was the car I wanted to spend my money on. The X3 is by all accounts a superior road car which is where most CUV/SUV/SAV will spend 99.9% of its life. |

Not that BMW's reliability is all that great, but I guess Land Rover's reliability record didn't enter into the analysis.

This was not a surprise seeing the hoopla around the Evoque since launch. I personally think it is an attractive vehicle, but we all know the X3 is really the better ride.

I think the Evoque is a great looking car but that's where the points end. I drove it and it doesn't even come close to the X3. There's a huge glass roof on the Evoque but it doesn't open...that's a big mistake. In the bochures the seats look like you want to sleep in them but they aren't all that great. And the driving position sucked. I like the steering wheel to be low and couldn't get the adjustable wheel to a position that was comfortable. So my arms always felt like they were up to high. I wouldn't spend that kind of money on it.

Better sense in the UK http://www.whatcar.com/awards/4x4s/index.html
Parked next to an Evoque at work on Weds. It certainly had "presence" (which will date quickly, I think) but it was pretty small, particularly inside. Still very happy with my X3. Saw a Q3 in Leeds earlier in the week (pre-launch? had dealer plates on) ... it was FUGLY!

maybe they tested the cars off road... they are 4x4 after all... perhaps the x3 would have won if it had the n20... the baby rr has a turbo 4...

This coupled with poor economy a 6 speed box and terrible reliability issues, it was BMW all the way. The X3 is in a different class.

I was going to buy the Evoque, but it didn't have the 4 year maintenance plan my previous car (audi) had. I discovered BMW had the 4 year maintenance, plan and the rest was history.
I dislike the tall feeling of SUVs, but after moving to the NYC area I discovered it would be nice to have something that tackled flooded road, huge pot holes and generally rough roads with more grace. I didn't get that tall sense of gravity while driving the evoque. I liked the materials in the interior, the five cameras, the offroad capability, the good fuel economy, the touch screen interface (the whole cockpit is pretty intuitive), a huge panoramic roof and the handling (magneride). Reliability was unknown because it is being built in the same plant as the jaguars. The new jags have pretty good reliability. I bought the X3 because for the same money I got more of what really mattered to me. I got a more powerful engine, a bigger boot (trunk), a 4 year bmw assist plan and a 4 year maintenance. I also preferred a second year car over a first year car. I'm getting used to the tall SUV feeling. I can't wait until the break-in period is over. |

The Ford engine is probably the good part. It was chosen on looks? LOOKS? I saw one on the road yesterday. Exposing it in public should be a misdemeanor.
