Average speed: 11.2 mph (gotta love sitting at red lights) Odometer: 715 mi Projected Distance between fill-ups (when full): 320 mi (unrealistic because I've now refueled for the fourth time and we're still only at 700+ miles) Average mileage: 13.7 mpg. On my new one month old 35i in stop and go I am getting 18.6 mpg. I have around 800 miles on the X3, so could still be in break in mode.
I drive very conservatively, so I don't understand why I am not getting what everyone else is reporting! Maybe I need to step on it a bit more. |

Just hit 3k. Commute that initially produced 20.5mpg is now making 22.3 mpg. Difference in traffic? My driving? Maybe, but I can't point to anything. Feels like break-in, but I don't know if there's any reality to that idea.

35i 1000miles
17-18 for slow suburban short trips - usually less than 5 miles 26-28 for steady 70mph highway cruising Getting it into 8th gear (above 50mph) really makes a big difference |

Also, outdoor temps are getting higher so less "warm-up" time. Let's hope the upward trend continues. If so, by the end of the year you'll be getting 30mpg.

Just made a trip from Florence, SC to Raleigh, NC and back on Tuesday. All hwy, 75 MPH. Must have been a perfect storm of good conditions. 28.9 MPG! By far the best I've gotten in the first 2000 miles of driving.

I thought it was about time to bump this thread with an update:
Back in February, I did a short run (116 miles round trip on a tollway in Northern Illinois and with around 300 miles on the 35i. I was impressed with the mileage which was then 28.6 mpg. On Monday, 5/16 I did the same run, under essentially the same conditions. It was exceptionally cool for May here that night (temp. was 35 deg. F.), so the conditions were very similar to Feb). Conditions: X3 35i Current odo reading = 2300 miles Fuel = Shell V-Power 93 Octane (10% Ethanol) Air temp. = 35deg. F. Tire pressures: 34 psi (F) & 37psi (R). Pirelli 18 inch P-7 run-flats Avg. speed: 67 mph - Cruse control set - Run was late at night - very little traffic - hardly ever touched the throttle pedal or brakes. Current indicated trip mileage was 31.8 mpg which I find amazing for a 4300 lb, 300 hp, high drag vehicle. I guess that with the engine and driveline now essentially fully broken in and loosened up, the frictional drag is a little lower. My current long term mixed highway/suburban average is 20.9 mpg for driving that's about 80% suburban 30-40 mph, and 20% highway. This has remained essentially the same since the car was brand new, but now I'm driving more aggressively. I'm pretty sure that if I was driving the way I did for the first 1200 miles, my mileage would have gone up a little. |

I've only gone through one tank so far, which was not efficient due to all the idling and stop/start driving one does when playing with a new car. But since fillup, I've reached about 26.5 on my commute which is mostly highway, and with all the windy weather it has leveled off to around 25. It'll take a few tanks to get a good idea.

We have about 700 miles so far and are seeing a little over 22 mpg with a pretty even mix of city/hwy driving. I think we will see some improvement as the car loosens up a bit.

I'm amazed by that number! I'm not there yet. At 450 miles I'm seeing around 26 HWY mileage in normal traffic with a somewhat varied speed and I'm pretty impressed with that. Road trip (cruise control) mileage above 30 would be surreal. Driving my first SUV and feeling just a little defensive about it with all the emerging electric and hybrid super mileage technology. I find myself telling people what great mpg it gets compared to my old audi allroad. Occasionally ... I tell them it's incredibly fast as well!

It was nice to go 116 miles and still see the fuel gauge read above the 3/4 mark. If this is any indication, 500 miles per tankful for steady cross-county driving should be possible. |

Thats incredible mileage! I am round 19.3 with mixed driving - mostly in town. One extended trip got around 26 mpg for 130 mile round trip. I'm very curious if I will see better mpg with the change in wheels/tires - the above mpg was with the 19s.

Mixed driving with 300 miles on the car 22.9 mpg average speed 29 miles/hr. Only problem is that I find myself driving to the gas mileage indicator rather than the speedometer.
